People who call things “basic” fail to realize they are making themselves look “basic” because they have now thrown themselves in a category that’s become more popular than the criteria they were hating on in the first place.

..these are basic though. were just not going to describe things anymore ?

  • Dec 19, 2020

ive only seen 5 of the movies in that pile and the only ones i liked were gangs of ny and goodfellas

You do realize there’s a difference between genuinely disliking something (which you’re entitled to) VS using an overly popular pretentious term such as “basic”...... in layman's term its “basic af” to just call something basic.

Everyone tries so hard to not be “basic” that they end up being just that.

yall have no taste if you don't think goodfellas and godfather are one of the best of all time. In generally the movies he picked fit all into a specific vibe, of course you could pick more "colorful" movies and more variance but those are mostly very good. My list would include more variety

But how are you guys coming to this conclusion? You guys are assuming the movies in OP is the ONLY films the person watches and likes. And assuming they don’t like non popular s*** as well.

    “Broaden your horizon”
I’ve seen and loved a super wide variety of movies and one the few on here who has a diverse taste in liking s*** like this, to “cape” films, to film festival indies, to oldies and I still love these type of crime films the most. That’s a personal opinion it doesn’t mean you have to broaden your horizon just because you enjoy something more that differs from what you like.

uh, because the post asks a hypothetical about these being his "favorite" movies. not movies he likes or movies in his collection

if he likes crime movies, I'm sure he would have enjoyed (and added to his favorites)
    underrated films like:

    City of God
    A Prophet
    Hard Boiled
    Fargo
    Nightcrawler
    Elite Squad
    I Saw The Devil
    Infernal Affairs
    Oldboy
    Run Lola Run
    La Haine

Apparently they’re “basic” whatever the f*** that means lmaooo

Me personally I would switch out American psycho, boondocks, deer Hunter and mad Max if we’re talking about my personal favorites. And also trade Reservoir dogs for Pulp, but both movies equal the same thing so that’s just me nit picking

Yes they are asking what are your favorites. Why can’t those be your FAVORITES while still enjoying the films you mentioned?

Like your pushing your own personal opinion that if someone watched the films in OP plus the films you mentioned then there’s no way they wouldn’t include some of the films you mentioned making you assume they haven’t seen them. And I’m hear to let you know that assumption is dead wrong. Because I personally have seen all the films you named and all the ones in OP (except deer Hunter) and love damn near all of them (your list included) but MY FAVS would have to go to goodfellas, dark knight, godfather, departed, wolf etc.

But I’ll throw you a bone I’d trade boondocks for Nightcrawler and American Psycho for infernal affairs because I have to respect where Departed originally came from

Or you could of went the “non-basic” route and just state an honest opinion of why you dislike something. Chalking something up as “basic” or even “unseasoned” is such a cop out that gets too over used these days to the point it’s become a trend.

Nope. Unseasoned is all I need to describe these movies.

yes, there are things that are universally loved because they are objectively very good as far as something can be objectively good. "We all drink water its so basic" kind of thing

I'd just think it's a regular dude who likes to watch movies but has never taken a deep dive beyond the mainstream classics

nothing wrong with that and almost all of these are great films.wouldn't say the person has cool or interesting taste nor would I mock him. this section usually does a great job of avoiding snobbery but page 1 was cringe

also would probably have more fun hanging out with a dude with this list than with somebody whose list consists of Le Samourai, Stalker, and In The Mood For Love

agree with this, don’t think it’s anything more than a guy wanting to collect universal classics. none of these are even remotely obscure or hard to find which is fine cause a lot of them are great.

although I wouldn’t say this person would be more fun considering it’d be interesting to chat with someone who has seen more than just american films, there’s people who like tark, bergman and wkw who are just as chill

Re-watching Mystic River rn wow it’s like sooo “”””basic””””
