Nelly was busy dropping mid albums and going country WAY before the new gen, shoutout SWEAT and SUIT. He dumped his own legacy down the drain a long long time before a new generation even had a chance to not respect him

Nelly was one of those crossover radio rappers who's career was already on borrowed time because he was heavily dependent on casual listeners for sales.

Once G-Unit blew up with the hardcore sound and Kanye/Wayne started changing the landscape of rap, his time was almost up cause casuals tend to flock to whatever the most popping sound is.

And that's a normal cycle for a lot of rappers and pop stars.

Wayne, Kanye, Jay, Nas, Em, Kendrick, Drake, etc. have a much stronger core fanbase in hip hop than Nelly ever did which explains why Nelly build up a new fanbase in country.

    Bingo

Nelly made the mistake of making crossover radio records without solidifying his rap base

That creates an incredibly futile fanbase
