"Manufactured and marketed by Republic"
I dont think thats the same as a "licensing" deal
Could see him owning 50% of his masters and 50% universal
@safe what do u think?
Because it says "Manufactured by"?
I'm not saying he has a licensing deal, it's a distribution deal. I'm saying that the principle owner is the first person credited.

I dont think abel has as much as freedom as we think tbh. He did an interview before saying that his label wouldnt allow the hills to be the single but that there was 1 higher up who okay'd it because he likes dark abel lol
Just to be clear I'm not saying all artists should be independent. Just that the deals don't have to be one sided if you come in with some heat.
Like Youngboy could partner with a label and get more marketing rn without giving up ownership.
Yeah.. "right now". But idk 5 years ago? Without all the success? Look. I offer you a 2 million man.. you can help your family and friends who have stuggled all their lives, you can make music, more money and enjoy life like never before, get away from that everyday struggle and hustle. Now go tell your friends and family that you didnt accept the offer and decided to go indie instead knowing that you probably never see that kind of money again and your sister has to go to mcdonalds, tomorrow she has that a job interview there you know and your uncle loses his car next month because he's out of work rn. Thats the reality, no? Btw Sry english is like my 3rd language

Sure. A licensing deal probably gives you more freedom than an M&D. But I was only talking about who owns the masters. And I'm guessing that Weeknd owns his.
Your an idiot
if ur a broke artist living in ur moms basement and u just get offered 500k advance from a label, how the f*** would u say no, u gonna go tell ur mom that u just rejected a 500k advance, these labels are predatory as f*** and now know to manipulate young poor artist, Its dumb to blame artist for this s***.
This is like saying you don't technically need to play college football to go to the nfl

I hope so tbh. He did have a lot of leverage before signing and so many offers

Valid point.
Assume you're like Uzi or Thugger. Not like Lil Pump. If you are talented you can take less money in advance.
You could get 1M and options on 3 albums instead of 2M and options on 5 for example.
I'm not saying "don't take any deal"
Yall dummies really think this is only a rap related thing huh
Like rich hipster singer songwriters don't sign s***ty label deals
In general no matter what industry your in if your don’t read contracts or get somebody to read it for you then your an idiot.
True but even in 2011, that was excellent foresight by him.
If the label is the one that manufactured your career, then that's different. Whatever gets signed is what it is.
2011????? This been known. Prince wrote slave on his face for a reason. Michael Jackson bought the Beatles masters and own his own
Just look up his albums on streaming services.
He has a distro and marketing deal with Republic but the principle owner is The Weeknd XO. Same way w/ Drake now the owner is 'OVO' with licensing to Republic.
Drake only owns his last two albums though
you are = you're
your = possessive (this is your thread where you f***ed the grammar up)
calling someone an idiot then messing up grammar
Who gives a f***. Nigga you ain’t smart don’t pretend to be something your not

I don't gotta pretend s*** lol
But at the same time they do target young black kids who’s struggling. Of course they’re going to be thirsty to sign whatever they throw at them. They’re desperate to help their fam eat and elevate.

The Weeknd got a great deal according to his management
No evidence either way but I would assume XO own the masters and he has some large stake in XO meaning he has a good stake in his masters
He’s definitely not doing a pure licensing deal though
It’s important for people to keep talking about this because so many artists don’t even know what masters or publishing means
You don’t necessarily need to own them to be successful but if you don’t understand the value of them you’re gonna get f***ed contract wise
The amount of threads to say "I don't feel nad" is so weird
Y'all really hate these people in gonna make a thread on this tbh it's two things I've gathered from this thread and the other one.
you are = you're
your = possessive (this is your thread where you f***ed the grammar up)
