Appropriation is when you strip parts of content from its original form to what is acceptable for you and your culture, and trying to dictate that the original form be rebranded to better suit you. Gatekeeping, despite the stigma around the word, is about understanding, respecting, and preserving the original media in all its glory.

i watched some attack on titan when it was brand new back in like 2014 but i lost interest in anime as a whole

To be honest, if someone told me they had only watched 10 movies in their life and said they were a movie fan, I wouldn't exactly consider them to be a fan (or a big fan at least.) This applies to basically everything, so from a numerical standpoint I guess I can understand the tweet. I don't know, maybe my definition of what constitutes a fan is more strict(?) than most people.

Gatekeeping the definition of fan behind watching certain non-mainstream shows is dumb though.

That's a good point, and it was something I considered. But I just ended up coming to the conclusion that they're just a fan of those series instead of the medium as a whole. Me personally, I would have a hard time calling myself a fan of the medium if I only bothered watching 10 series, no matter how many episodes they had. I guess a decent comparison is someone who only listens to 10 artists who have extensive discographies calling themselves a music fan. I don't know, just feels weird and I personally wouldn't be able to call myself a fan if I was like that.
