I finally got around to watching The Wire after all this time despite the extreme hype. It’s true, it really is the greatest tv show ever. Never have I cared about fictional characters as much. The way it blends so many different stories and ties them all together. Taking something mundane and relating it to exciting stories

Widows feels so much like The Wire it could be a spin-off. It’s a heist movie about a Stringer Bell/Marlo clone working his way into city politics and trying to become legitimate. Daniel Kaluuya is the top enforcer and is literally Chris Partlow, they have the same quiet energy and scariness and even voice. This movie is f***ing excellent and you will 100% love it if you like The Wire. They’re so similar that it could be argued that Widows bit the show heavily

my favorite scene from the movie, where it’s all in one shot and has The Cool Kids free styling in a ..hostile… environment

^im telling you Daniel Kaluuya is literally Chris Partlow

also shoutout to the sound design team. that silenced pistol actually sounded like a real silenced gun and not the typical spy movie ‘pew pew’ sound. s***s still loud as hell

F*** no I’m not saying Widows is as good as the wire lmao. I’m just recommending it to people who are Wire fans because their structure/tone/plot are identical to the show, just set in Chicago instead of Baltimore

widows isn’t perfect but it’s absolutely underrated

it’s actually insane that it didn’t have a bigger impact, i guess it was just a little too early in a lot of the (great) casts careers for it to be recognized

S*** was kinda weak coming from Steve McQueen.

I think the main reason it’s so overlooked is because of the marketing being deceptive. It made it look like it was gonna be some badass action heist movie, when it’s really about city politics, racial issues, and crime.

It’d be like going into The Wire thinking it would mostly be about Omar robbing d*** dealers and stash houses lol.

It’s just another case of deceptive marketing, exactly like how The Empty Man was marketed as a teen movie Slenderman ripoff, when it’s actually a 2.5 hour slow burn Lovecraftian story about Buddhist mysticism while it ponders the nature of reality itself, and therefore nobody saw it at first. and those that did hated it because it wasn’t what was advertised (but luckily it’s slowly getting really popular)

when I see the cover for this movie I always think it's a heist movie and the characters are widows that will rob a new bank since all their husbands got killed on their last job

edit: read the plot summary and it's basically exactly what it is

it’s wayyyy more nuanced than that. it’s not like a typical heist movie. you’d just have to watch it. the heist is like 30% of the movie

  • Nov 28, 2022

Daniel Kaluuya was great in this
