Domo Genesis & The Alchemist - No Idols

Domo understood the assignment!! The Alchemist is probably one of the best producers alive.

This mixtape is so underrated the samples are crazy and get Domo into this more aggressive flow. The feature list is rare: Tyler, Earl, Vince Staples, Action Bronson, Smoke DZA, Freddie Gibbs & Spaceghostpurrp, all delivered. It’s different than the usual OF sound but aged well and could might as well be a new album. Really really like it and would recommend any rap fan to check it out regardless of being an OF fan.

Fav songs: Prophecy, All Alone, Power Ballad, Till The Angels Come, No Idols.

This was the only Domo tape I really loved, you're right about it aging so well. Still can throw this on and enjoy it just as much. Earl features are great on both tracks.

    Tyler, The Creator - Wolf

I just wanna ride my bike…

Very nostalgic album for me this used to be my soundtrack of going to school and for these team fortress 2 sessions… hell yeah.

Wolf shows a lot of growth in Tyler. The production is still grimey at times but he leans more into a melodic R&B/jazz inspired sound in this album, and overall everything sounds way better composed and realized.

The concept of the album makes it feel like somewhat of a play, different than the earlier albums where it’s all about how f***ed up and dark Tyler is, it’s about him having a love triangle in a music camp and it’s a way for him involving some personal topics in and still relate to the story and concept occasionally.

This is also his best attempt at rapping so far leaning into a lot of storytelling which has been his strong suit. It’s nice to hear all the odd future rappers in the same album with legendary artists like Pharrell and Erykah Badu.

It’s not a perfect album for me I think it has flaws and not all songs are great as the highs. The concept isn’t as tight as the songs you can take out of context here. And while I like Tyler trying to rap about more serious and social topics here it doesn’t feel like his lane. I like it more when he relates stories to himself.

Still this has aged well much more than I expected with Tyler’s personality and charisma carrying this along with the new musical style and its charm and warmth (with a bit of edginess still).

Might f*** around and be a goat named Felicia!

Fav songs: Cowboy, Answer, Partyisntover/Campfire/Bimmer, IFHY, Rusty.

    Classic

Wolf might be the most varied Tyler album production wise

    Aside from maybe Cherry Bomb

    Aged so well too

Possibly a Top 3 album from him

wish i could go back to 2011 and rediscover all their work for the first time again. great times

Me too, I often think about it, whether for his albums or others

it's so great to have grown up or experienced their developments all of them

    mr get dough

    Timeless is a good song

Ali was a solid tape, Mike G was a pretty good member in 09/10 but past that he never got better while the rest of the members did and I feel like they noticed it and stopped including him in the music as much

Yeah it's regrettable but I think he didn't have the means (less popular?) unlike the other members of the group

    MellowHigh - MellowHigh

This is less the usual OF sound and more boom bap or reminiscent of the trippy alternative rap of those years, sounds like TDE/ASAP type s***. I think it’s a fun little project but with few highlights. For a project called “MellowHigh” I’d either want it to sound more “high” and cloudy or more like the dark grimey MellowHype sound, which comes up here sometimes. Still I like Left Brain’s production here and too bad he didn’t produce to artists outside of OF at the time. Overall I would call it decent with potential to be better / more unique.

Fav songs: Yu, Troublesome, Roofless, Cold World.

Sorry mixed up the order a little. Had more of a hip hop vibe today so played this first.

cold world has one of my fav earl verses over a cold ass beat from left

    an underrated project to me

We've officially reached the weak era of OF

  • Jul 6, 2024

2013 was the last year Tyler and LB were on similar levels as producers

By 2015 Tyler was so clear of LB, i actually think LB was better than tyler in 09/10

Ok I hate to say this but Steve Lacy really saved The Internet... like they were so boring

    The Internet - Feel Good

I honestly just feel bored? It's better than the first album because it's less of that Jet Age sound (we do get some of it here but just a little) it's more jazz / neo soul influence. I like it more when it's leaning more on melody and tune. The long experimental songs just aren't worth your time they drag it out so much... All of these songs should be 3-4 minutes max and no value would be lost.

Fav songs: Tellem, Dontcha, You Don't Even Know, Runnin.

    Earl Sweatshirt - Doris

Dark and grimey just like the original OF sound, but more realized and better rapped than ever. Earl symbolically starts and ends the OF era, after being outside of the group and growing, he drops album with the complex and sophisticated rapping we've come to expect, but better. While still youthful and with edgy lyrics, Earl is more intimate and clever in these songs and creates this dark vibe that carries the album.

The sound of the album is cinematic and hardcore and compliments Earl's rapping a lot. The features are great with Vince as the MVP having a lot of chemistry with Earl and rapping on his level. While not exactly the final OF album I think it symbolizes the growth of the OF artists and them moving past the collective into their own sound. Classic album!

Fav songs: Pre, Burgundy, Sunday, Hive, Chum, Molasses.

Awesome thread got me going back to a lot of these projects

It was a little much but I found out about a lot of OF projects I never played before through this

And went back to albums I haven't played in years like Wolf and Doris

  • Jul 6, 2024

    Dope thread.

  • Jul 6, 2024

    Ok!

Finished what I wanted to do.

Went over 24 OF albums from the early years.

I also considered continuing this thread to 2016 but it was a little much, I might (not sure if I will) listen to these albums later and add short reviews about them.

Since Doris is when OF started to fade as a collective it feels like a good place to stop.

Overall I'd say the collective's sound is still appealing today and it's fun going back to these older songs.

OF produced a lot of talent and different artists who influenced the culture. And you see that talent form throughout the years.
