It’s because capitalism is shoved in our faces and materialism / wealth is glamorized, so everyone is always chasing the next raise or bonus because they think it will make them happy

There are also people like me who work in Corp America and know it will never make them happy but we don’t know what else to do. If you gonna work for Corp America might as well milk the s*** out of it and take what you can because guess what, life could be worse
