I did a deep dive into the classic phrase that instantly starts a firestorm on social media

    Touching on things like -

Why wouldn’t a rapper just be considered an artist in the first place? (They should be lol but mostly racism internalized or otherwise)

Why do rappers keep saying it even though it pisses people off? (Depends)

Is every rapper who says this treated equally? (No)

But what I’m most curious about from KTT is

How do you feel when an artist says this? do you view them any differently? Why or why not?

With Kanye, it was a way of keeping him in the convo without dismissing his legitimacy as a rapper outright because of the GOOD music sweatshop writing his rhymes. But that was all the ammo that vultures like Posty needed as a stepping stone.

Atp my default response to “I’m an artist” is: show me some art. I can respect a visionary who does it all themselves, I have equal respect for the factory artist, but the art has to be art

While I don’t always have the semantic talent to effectively quantify artistic merit through language, the instinctive ability to clock that which is not art stays sharp forever

    3/5 trash artists in thumbnail.

A 2003 Beanie Sigel funk flex freestyle has more artistic value than all that contrived one foot in one foot out bullshit a lot of these so called artists produce

Yea and I think in the case of someone like BigXThaPlug he is totally capable of making something you and I would call art. Dude has an awesome voice and has made good songs. It just sucks he’s inherently tying the value of that to him branching out from hiphop because that’s really not true

I dont think there anything wrong with saying theres a difference between the two

Someone could be a good singer but a bad artist

    Same with rap

But thats not to say alot of these dudws sayin they artists are even good enough artist to be doing all that

I see what you mean but that definition of artist is like, whole package combination of songwriter producer product maker vocalist etc. in this video I was using artist as broadly, anyone who makes art

There’s some racist aspects to it as well

An “artist” can get through more doors than a “rapper” can

  • Dec 9, 2025

thinkin about all the times I’ve seen the worst dogshit rappers whose music is indistinguishable from one anothers’ insisting they’re artists then completely fading after their 15 minutes

Rappers that are artists don’t have to try to convince people

Ofc i know what he means that but we should invent a new word for that tbh.
Id never want to hear a Charlie Clips album but hes an artist in what he does

fair. Yea so much of this is semantics anyway. We have our meaning of the word artist and then the textbook meaning

It’s all subjective at the end of the day but I would say Charlotte Brontë not being a good sonnet writer isn’t a worthwhile criticism to dismiss her novels

Most of the time when a primary hip-hop artist says this, it's from a standpoint of not wanting to be limited to just being a Rap artist.

Because a lot of old ass boomers still see Rap as not a artform (due to racial biases or just thinking it's elementary).

Other times, when it's said. It's really a disrespectful manner

    (Look at Post lol)
