The author, Wilbert Awdry, was taking his 6 year old son Christopher to his elementary school one morning, around 1948. There was a heavy demand for lead and unused war materials at the time, so it was common for trains to speed past warning signs when traffic was less congested. While Wilbert was quick to walk past one of the railways, his son was hesitant and told his father to wait a minute before they cross, as he was scared of the “bullet train” his friends were talking about at school. Wilbert was not having any of it and pulled them across the tracks. As fate would have it, little Christopher was hit by a speeding supply train, with only his tiny right hand hanging on to his fingers. As soon as Wilbert got a glimpse of his little body torn into pieces. All of a sudden, Wilbert burst out into laughter and was reported to have said “this is what i needed, the way out”
While doing his own research, Wilbert discovered that the train was a “Thomas” engine style train, and in a stroke of luck, Wilbert concocted the concept of a world full of hyperrealistic, overly friendly trains.
