  • South Korea's fertility rate, already the world's lowest, continued its dramatic decline in 2023, as women concerned about their career advancement and the financial cost of raising children decided to delay childbirth or to not have babies.

The average number of expected babies for a South Korean woman during her reproductive life fell to a record low of 0.72 from 0.78 in 2022, data from Statistics Korea showed on Wednesday.

South Korea instense and bizarre gender war culture should be included in discussions about fertility rates there imo, don’t think it’s possible to sum it up as career advancement priority for women or higher living costs though they do play a role

think of it as an accelerated version of our petty gender wars where men and women would usually online discuss about gender inequality, wage gap , double standards and such

But much more polarized where each side are more entrenched within their positions with as well bat s*** insane stuff happening where a women gets stabbed over ignoring a guy in 2016 or in 2023 where a girl got attacked cause some guy thought she was a feminist cause she had short hair

Though outside those wild incidents there the usual sexual harassment in work places, unequal pay and such. It’s also accelerated cause men don’t have it easy either higher unemployment rates among young men compared to women and mandatory military service which further adds flame to the fuel

in my honest and completely unbiased opinion North Korea must liberate the south

Sounds f***ed. Society is in desperate need of a reconstruction.

  • In South Korea, which is battling the world's lowest fertility rate and declining productivity, this has become a serious concern. So much so that authorities are offering young recluses who meet a certain income threshold a monthly stipend to coax them out of their homes.

Those between nine and 24 years of age from lower-income families can receive up to 650,000 won ($490; £390) as a monthly living allowance. They can also apply for subsidies for a raft of services, including health, education, counselling, legal services, cultural activities and even "correction of appearance and scars".

North Korea would send the south into 2nd world status, they don’t have the infrastructure or capital to homogenize North Koreas entire population.

South Korea has always been a patriarchal/mysoginstic society but in the past 20-30 year, SK women's increasing presence in universities/good paying jobs has bred male resentment as men are faced with more competition and more scrutiny in romantic relationships (since South Korean women are now more financially independent and dont need to rely on a man). Think of the culture around people like Andrew Tate and relationship podcasts, now imagine that on steroids and prominent enough to be a political force. That's been Korea for like a decade.

There's a crisis of social reproduction in those Asian countries because much of their economy has been based on having a more exploitable labor force, but times have changed. So now theyre just left with this hyperexploitative working environment, and there's only so much you can squeeze from people. They just don't have the means or the time to raise a family, much like people in other countries.
