Yeah. There's therapy dogs that make people feel better. It's not really a stretch to think people find comfort in pets

This. When I was in a clinic we had this dog come around once a week. He could do lots of stuff for you like open/close doors, get you food/drinks out the refrigerator etc. without having to lay a finger. He was very cool and his presence was calming to a lot of us. So it definitely is real.
