  • I feel like when people think of rappers who were politically "conscious" during the golden age of politically conscious hip-hop (late 80's, 90's), they think of Public Enemy and Tupac (prior to Death Row). Also Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Common. It feels like Cube is rarely mentioned

I don't think I got into Ice Cube's stuff until around the Straight Outta Compton movie, and I was shocked at how political it was. Songs like Black Korea, You Ain't Gonna Take My Life, and Bird in the Hand are about as political as it gets

I don’t think anyone’s really checking for Ice Cube’s “political consciousness” these days

tbh you're probably right I haven't even gone down that rabbit hole out of all the 80s-90s hip hop I love. Open to being put on as always

I think anybody who listens to his albums knows that he makes political music but he's well known for his hits and his acting now for the most part

in a very general sense its distilled down to straight outta Compton crazy mf'er named ice cube, it was a good day, and his movie stuff

Cube was more political than a lot of the people you named (minus Public Enemy).

    Political consciousness is often forgotten

West coast rappers in general dont get enough credit which is sad

  • It's cause he obviously started doing the YAEEYAEEEEEYYYYYY gangsta thing full time and stopped making that kind of music.... (as his main thing)
it's quite an important part of his career (and he also had his first album produced by the Bomb Squad - Public Enemy's production team) but it's definitely overshadowed when you look at the amount of gangsta music he's made in comparison since then... some of his best s*** though forreal

Why are you talking about this when you’re one of the most conservative, professional tap dancing fools on this site? If you were around for Cubes prime you’d be complaining about how “he makes everything about race” and “well not ALL cops”

Can we be honest about how Ice Cube put out some really weird mediocre gangsta music around 1997 - 2002

Do you know anyone who goes hard for Cubes post 1997 output? And he still literally has 5x as many good songs as Snoop. What’s even the point of this post foh

yeah I couldn't believe it when I first heard. and yet when people think of Cube, they think of NWA (aggressive gangsta rap) or "Today Was a Good Day."

He said a lot of real s***. And then he f***ed a lot of it up last year by being on his anti-semetic s*** again.

  • Jun 25, 2021

Nah we remember it but his recent torrent of political consciousness has definitely tarnished some of that legacy. Its kind of like lupes "genius" did when he got caught up debating politics and conspiracy theories with people that do it everyday.

  • Jun 25, 2021

Still one of his most important tracks. Unfortunately its message has been ignored

that's not true, I love politically conscious music. and the things Cube made about race were things like Asian store owners discriminating against black consumers or police officers killing black people or the Rodney King incident, versus people today being like "omg this artist lip synced a no-no word, can we ever listen to them again?"

also Ice Cube met with Trump's team (and took a ton of flack for it) because he's smart enough to know that if black voters vote for Democrats as a matter of course rather than make the two parties compete for the black vote, then black people will get nothing like black people have been getting for the past 57 years

    enjoy Juneteenth tho

Also, Ice Cube never did say "all" cops. Because back then there was such a thing as nuance. You are the one tap dancing as if Joe Biden is gonna die for you lol

Your political imagination is so small that you can’t possibly imagine someone not just defaulting to one of two American political parties. Seems like - what your types would call - very “NPC behavior” to me!
