i know it's about consumption of animal products and byproducts, and that these animals are (mostly, hopefully) domesticated species and not wild
but
if you think about it you're keeping an animal captive, can you really say you rock with animals like that and go keep one (or more) as a prisoner
you'd rather keep them captive in little cages in an adoption center or randomly going around everywhere and ending being a victim of human society,
or you'd rather adopt them and give them a better life than they had?
keep in mind here we're talking about demosticated animals, wild ones are a different discussion
imo if you really wanna dig down into it the ownership of any living being like that isnt moral. but that hill to die on is so far off in the distance. it's some vegans out there who get all mad over ppl having seeing eye dogs n s***. i think thats just such a tiny battle to fight compared to like oh idk factory farming.
what me and my vegan friends do is practice tnr for the local stray cat/dog population so that they don't breed more animals to be left to die on the street or in a cage.
and on a more personal level my wife and i have decided that once our cat passes away that we won't have pets for quite some time. partly out of not being 100% okay with the concept of pet ownership (feeding animals to animals? kinda weird as a vegan), but mostly (for me) because we want to move out of the country and a companion animal of any kind really complicates that whole situation. so yeah. my three cents (inflation, you know)
I think most pets would find a better life if they are moved from a shelter to someone's home
i have a cavalier kings charles and i tell u these things would not operate in the wild

You said “captive” when you meant to say “alive”
is it moral for pets to be vegan?
yes i think so but some pets (like my cat) just won't f***ing eat vegan food so like, i ain't gonna let the stupid b**** starve.
Idk but I’ve definitely thought every now and then how sad it is sometimes for my fish or parrot or hamster how sad ur kinda just stuck in a cage
Especially the parrot, birds were made to fly free and it’s a big cage but damn
Atleast with dogs imo they have some sort of freedom not trapped in a literal cage but it’s def a grey area imo

Yeah birds as pets is kinda wild to me except for those few ppl u see with like a borderline wild parrot that just hangs out with em all the time in some tropical location. Also all pet birds I've ever met have hated me and so i hate them so my opinion is biased.
Dogs also have thousands of years of evolutionary bonding with humans. You can't ignore that. Dogs are bare happy doing stuff for/with humans, being trained n all that. I think police dogs are super f***ed up tho. Those dogs is like broken mentally and are unhinged. Catch then biting their handlers and s***.

Why would having a dog be unethical then if they're evolved to be that way?
Wouldn't deeming the ownership of dogs as unethical just be projecting the immorality of humans owning other humans to a situation that's different

For me a lot of it comes down to what ur feeding the dog i guess.
At the end of the day the ownership of any animal under any condition of situation is unethical. But like i said earlier that's a hill to die on in like the year 2400 or something. if we're not extinct by then.
Right now the focus should be on the billions of livestock animals being killed for food, not the thousands of companion animals being moderately to severely mistreated.

You don't take your bird out the cage? My cockatiel used to hang outside of the cage most of the time and fly all around the crib.

I agree with it not being a pressing issue but I think it's just an interesting discussion whether that's not projecting morality between humans to those between human and an animal that has evolved to bond with and depend on humans
Dogs and Cats are domesticated animals from humans over the years. Imo it’d be anti-vegan to not adopt one and give them the best life they could have.
Neither can survive on their own without human helping them, and by that I mean you can just put them in the wild and they’d survive they currently can survive by themselves going through garbage or being fed on some days by humans but wouldn’t it be better to just adopt them at that point?
is it moral for pets to be vegan?
not unless its made that way like cows. Not dogs or cata etc.

Yeah very interesting and dogs is a weird gray area in the discussion tbh.
And if it could be considered a projection of morality, i still think it would be the right thing. Animals deserve pretty much all the same rights as human animals.
My bone to pick with pet ownership basically boils down to people feeding themselves and their pets other animals they have decided aren't worthy of the same treatment as their pets. But again, not all animals will eat vegan food and cats particularly need some fancy ass s*** cuz they're full on obligate carnivores. So like is it right at all that these cats is getting bred? They kill billions of birds and s***. So that's where the tnr comes in, the least I can do is catch strays and get em fixed. And now I'm rambling again lmfaooo
"For vegans" shut up
