DISCLAIMER: “ABUSER” IS GENDER NEUTRAL. FAMOUS MEN AND WOMEN HAVE THE CAPACITY TO DO IT IN SPITE OF THE DIDDY EXAMPLE BELOW

These Diddy/Cassie docs (revolting stuff smh) and seeing how we really do kinda be making exceptions when it comes to our favorite artists and abusers.

Cause reading them docs i remember Carti got a track record with domestic violence. Nas himself had his own issues with Kelis too. Or even danny boy talking bout how he got groomed by mjb.

I guess part of this is realizing this art/genre i grew up on and loved has had a lot of issues from the jump. Especially coming to abuse. I wonder why is that? Did the trauma and self hatred of the oppressed and its poor surroundings (the hood) pollute the art from the beginning and was we doomed from the start?

Is hip hop in need of a cultural reset?

Do you put the art before the artist?

rap isn’t the issue cos this is commonplace in any genre at any level. rock and rollers from jimmy page to mick jagger to steven tyler to david bowie got an illustrious rap sheet. it’s men. you take away their legacies such as miles davis marvin gaye prince etc nothing much really changes. patriarchal society still is king

  • Nov 17, 2023

Nothing you wrote is coherent and underbaked ideas with no real thought behind them. If there was validity to others you mentioned then they would be under the same scrutiny as Diddy right now.

i’m not trying to be messy to try and get the blame shifted on others it’s more making a grand point that it’s a deep rooted societal issue not just something that plagues rap or music

Yes let’s blame the men across the spectrum. Women have never abused someone or been accused of such

with how hyper-masculine hip-hop is as a genre, i kinda wanna concede it was polluted from the jump once it grew from its basic origins in NY, because with the super macho attitude that coincides with the genre for the most part, domestic violence/abuse etc isn’t really too far behind its heels tbqh

But you know saying "it's men..." isn't how that's going to be interpreted.

the issue is with male a list celebs and artists they can hide their misdeeds much more easily through nda’s buying hotel security and using money to intimidate people into silence. a poorer person can still do similar things by intimidating said victim themselves and using manipulation to turn their family and friends against them. the issue with celebs is they can do it on an industrial scale almost like they’re phillip morris or coca cola.

How did miles Davis benefit from the patriarchy? He grew up in Midwest during Jim Crow era. I’m trying how to figure how you can be oppressed and participate in the patriarchy

yeah it was pretty strange to start seeing niggas call Frank Ocean a soulless capitalist when he started his brands and selling cock rings during his (ongoing) hiatus when that’s sort of the name of the game with a good bit of artists to an extent

no clue why they expected the dude who “finessed” his label to be some sort of socialist

Were you saying this for dr luke was being accused or are we doing this because rap is a genre you enjoy? It's the people. Sexual assault does not end or begin wth rap or in the hood environment

domestic violence / abuse allegations goes all the way back to biggie, kool g rap and nas to now which we have carti, lil uzi vert and plenty of those new soundcloud weirdos whose fans laugh at their allegations.

Title is general but Op specifically had a context of rap cause…thats my basis on what i grew up in BUT when the Kesha thing was going on I was tuned up.

I do admit it is a replication of our society at large hence my question “Did the trauma and self hatred of the oppressed and its poor surroundings (the hood) pollute the art from the beginning and was we doomed from the start?”

Maybe singling out the hood wasnt the best way to word it, but most places where the lower classes (of all races) come from

When you say it is men, you're opening yourself up for people claiming you mean it's JUST men, and that's when the mess starts and this whole thread will get derailed.
