Long read but i been wanted to talk about this for a minute as a fan.

(Disclaimer: this a nigga that been listening to Smi Di Gregio since Kolors snippet on Goldlink’s debut album this comes from an honest place as a fan that dont have an issue with any of the artist “shortcomings”)

Smino is THE best rapper out rn at wordplay. Like…pure wordplay, nobody is outdoing Smino at playing with the English language. Bro say s*** you be double taking like “how did you even connect that”

Versatility is up there, mans can sing and rap and play with flows for days.

…that’s almost kind of where it stops(?)

Somebody said it earlier the content/substance is pretty thin for the most part. Which is funny, cause when he gets in that bag that s*** is beautiful (e.g. long run, blkjuptr, ricky millions, father son; holy smoke, defilberator) but some black artists don’t want to make they darkest parts of they soul encompass they work so I never had an issue with this aspect of his work.

Fellow Smino fans, give me a hook you truly think the lowest common denominator type nigga would latch on to fairly fast?

That signature “play with the english language” style is lowkey his glass ceiling from achieving modern mainstream success (cause let’s be real if smino had came out just a few years earlier we wouldnt be having this discussion and bro would be outta here popping like fish grease) as @Rockman says it all “kinda runs together”

Some would also say, bro doesnt drop enough. Which is fair. But going through multiple labels to get independent and promo SAD 2 dropping before just stopping (rip mixtapes), and his tour drummer dying, all this in addition to running a very successful hoodie line making millions, i’m sure dude just be busy asf with everything.

He might go down like his St Louis counterpart (with higher regard) Nelly as someone that “may not be your #1 but always got the jam” type of rapper (which was more than enough to have a very long lasting legacy)

Smino is a special artist. from his style to aesthetics (which let’s be real, he shot it down for politics purposes, but we all know a certain somebody is trying to travis scott his asap rocky)

And in this current era being special puts a ceiling on you.
