MBDTF brought a lot of kids into hip hop that were previously only really listening to indie rock and s***. So there was a lot of kids joining sites like this who only listened to a couple rappers, while still holding rap as an inferior genre to their rock n roll masterpieces, and only considered certain rap artists to be real “artists” and dismissed the rest of the genre. Maybe not always out loud and explicitly but it was definitely a common attitude (and still is)

Obviously there’s good and bad to a genre bringing in new audiences like this but the negative phenomenon I described above was very real at the time. And I don’t say this to blame Kanye it’s just a fact of the matter. Obviously it’s a great album.
