they had a few missteps that ruined their momentum

    1. leading sat3 with boogie (which is one of their worst songs ever easily) instead of bleach (which is one of their best songs easily) and never giving bleach a video despite it being their biggest record was an awful move. i know kevin is all about artistic integrity but if he couldn’t think of a treatment he should have brought somebody else in. that song could have easily crossed them over into not only the black audience, but hottie on that album could have crossed them over into the (radio) pop audience as well. i know they were independent but those streams are enough to incentivize radio stations to try the songs at rotation.

    2. that moment after they announce the deal where they say the album is called the best years of our lives and drop those singles and do the fallon performance, besides the song with jazze pha and the heavy outkast influence, those songs were extremely mid and the videos felt like throwing paint at the wall and seeing what sticks. i love the concept but we saw they scrapped it all, but i wish they actually sat with the music and came to the conclusion that they could do better in private because it was an embarrassing move to start a complete rollout then scrap everything because it’s not good.

    3. iridescence isn’t garbage but it’s not great and it wasn’t time for that album yet. i think they were too comfortable in their niche and not thinking about how big the world is and how much potential they have. you can’t come off the first three albums that have such great hooks and pop appeal then try to make your yeezus right when you sign the deal. and the first single being a french word you can’t even pronounce with no discernible hook and the video is made so you can’t see their actual faces... i know RCA was regretting giving them complete control. this album wasn’t loved by fans, the outside world or critics. so it should have stayed on their own laptops.

    3. If You Pray Right and I Been Born Again are literally the same song. Same key, same notes, maybe a little different tempo. Both of these songs should not be on the album, let alone both being singles. This feels like a lack of refinement. Ginger is not mid to me, it just feels a bit misguided. Why go from the Slowthai interlude to a completely different song then back to the same beat he just rapped on? that kills the energy and momentum of St Percy. The one two punch of No Halo and Sugar on the album is incredible. they should have been the first two singles. maybe Boy Bye after that then go straight to the album. I’m pretty sure this is their most concise album but it would have been perfect at 10 instead of 12 and they should have changed the rollout a lot. Idk why Kevin would have more faith in those boring attempts at hype songs over two joints that feel like prime Timbaland beats with some of the best songwriting we’ve ever got from them.

also the fan base that they attracted online has ruined their public perception and put a lot of regular people off from wanting to take them seriously. that 14 year old pop stan fan base is lucrative at first but it stunted their growth.

Still shocking to me at how fast they fell off. Really crazy to a watch a group with this level of potential come and go like that.

great post my guy. coming from a fan since before brockhampton was brockhampton. you laid out alot of the things that i and many others who were invested in their trajectory were thinking. lots of missteps and shoddy marketing tactics really put them in a hole. they gettin money but thats about it.

man i been watching them literally since 2011 seeing kevin’s videos get posted on the odd future talk forum. he’s done a lot of great work and went above and beyond what most artists would do when it comes to videos, shows, performance art and covers. he’s supposed to be next in line of the kanye’s and kendricks and tyler’s so to see him fumble the bag is disheartening. hoping they can get it right the next go round. thankfully they at least scored the biggest song of their career with sugar but i wanna see them actually deliver an undeniably great album and roll it out in the right way this year.

a lot of people saying they've fallen off and (not just saying this because i'm a huge fan) but they're actually bigger than they've ever been before. they had 10mil spotify listeners, sugar has gone tiktok viral, doing so many tour shows + festivals, it just keeps going on. just because they're not talked about on ktt doesn't mean they're not popular outside of it. Ginger is also a great album (we all have our opinions) ktt also just doesn't want to see some of their own succeed for some reason i feel like too but that's my opinion.
