I'm not even a big Phil Elverum fan, but that guy's lyrics can be read like poetry sans music.

As for general songwriting, I feel like that's something Kendrick excelled at. He's got all sorts of intros, outros, bridges, breakdowns, and spoken word bits to compliment his verses and choruses. I don't think his work as lyricist as stunning as made out to be, but he did take song structure in a progressive direction.
