Was listening to More Life today, and this track came on… felt like making a thread to one Drake’s best tracks.
I really like this one because it showcases the best aspect of Drake’s music; introspective rapping over a moody and dark Toronto-esque instrumental (Yes @FDsignifier , Toronto DOES have a sound, thank you very much).
Drake also showcases the best aspects of his lyricism on this one.
Queen Street visions that nobody believed in
If we not on the charts, my XO niggas eatin'
Fifty-two consecutive weekends, shout out to Weeknd
The city gets stronger when everybody is speakin'
Not when everybody out here beefin'
We got it, now we just gotta keep it
America's most wanted, man, I'm still on the run
Crazy how a couple of years after this, Weeknd would sneak diss Drake on Lost In The Fire, and Drake & Weeknd would be an important component to the Drake x Kendrick beef. And yet, looking back at these lyrics, Drake’s right, the city is stronger if these two would link up or at the very least be united. It’s sad really.
Winnin' is problematic
People like you more when you workin' towards somethin'
Not when you have it
Way less support from my peers
In recent years as I get established
Unforgivin' times, but f*** it, I manage
Why is my struggle different than others'?
…What do you see when you see me?
When did all the things I mean
From the bottom of my heart start to lose meaning?
Maybe I share it with too many people
Back then it used to just feel like our secret
Back when I would write
And not think about how they receive it
These series of lines is crazy, especially compared to the pettiness, and self-important Drake that we see on Her Loss and FATD. His self-reflection - and dare I say it - self-awareness is super relatable here, and reminds me a lot of why I loved Drake’s music in the first place; yeah he was a guy that living out his dreams in the music biz and entertainment, but his thoughts on his fame, how he achieved it was super interesting, and he always able to frame these struggles in a way that I, a music listener not in the music biz, felt like I could relate to what he was saying.
Where has this man gone?
love this song
one of his best sad songs
