Mathematics like Physics and Chemistry are just ways we humans created to understand how the world works.

Newton didn't invent gravity, he just created laws and formulas for us to understand how it works.

People conflate mathmatics with the phenomena itself.. which we try to explain with math. The phenomena have always existed, mathmatics is manmade (discovered/invented)

and invented is just a more egotistical way of saying discovered.. invented has the connotation of being the first of its revelation where as discovered has the more humble connotation of coming across something which someone else, at some point, may have also discovered
