  • I had some thoughts on pitchfork going behind a paywall and I think things are in a precarious place for people who like reading words on a screen without a video behind it

but with that being said, there are some cool creators on IG doing something kinda similar but with short form.

Fantano has been on there a lot doing videos like this (random example):

    instagram.com/p/DRunUFokUta/?hl=en

and there are cooler, newer people like Tia Ho doing good work:

    instagram.com/reel/DQpikflkg-t/?hl=en

my question is - can videos like this ever truly be "journalism"? is there a way to fight back against the streamers, clip farmers of the world and keep good, discourse-starting pieces alive?

Unfortunately, no. I don’t mean that strictly in the doomer sense, though that’s part of it. We’re in the midst of a post-fin de siècle sea change. This is simply how the current mass audience wants to consume and digest their media. We’re going from silent pictures to talkies (which plenty of people bemoaned)

After this juncture, the total switch from print reality to video reality will conclude successfully

It’s like trying to keep hand drawn cell animation “alive” as a commercially viable mode of moviemaking. Yes, it’s now considered too effort-intensive. Yes, it necessitates paying people a living wage, and the trade itself requires skills many don’t have anymore. But most importantly, the kids don’t want that s*** now. They think it looks terrible

  • yes now its just twitter threads on ktt2

Following this juncture, the Neil Postman switch from print reality to video reality will successfully conclude

no one online seems interested in long form content anymore, some of the user reviews from the 2010s were among the best write ups on music I've ever seen but for most people it's no longer worth taking the time to express themselves beyond a meme or a one liner, all of the thoughtful discussion has moved to niche underground communities

Yeah that's true. But maybe those niche underground communities will come into a bit more prominence if people seek them out a bit more. I think Pigeons & Planes relaunching their website is a good step in the right direction. I do believe people still have an appetite for this type of content and discourse, they just don't have the habits that enable their consumption of it
