I’ve been thinking a lot about what drives people in their careers and life in general. Do you think having prestige is more important, or is it all about making money?
On one hand, prestige can bring a lot of non-monetary benefits. For example, consider a surgeon making a million a year. The prestige of being a surgeon comes with a lot of respect and the opportunity to make a significant impact on people's lives. The title itself carries a lot of weight in society, and many find fulfillment in the recognition and influence that come with such a prestigious career.
On the other hand, money can provide a different kind of security and freedom. Think about someone who owns a chain of gas stations and makes 1.5 million dollars a year. While this job might not have the same societal prestige as being a surgeon, the financial rewards are significant. With that kind of income, you can live very comfortably, support your family, travel, and indulge in various hobbies and passions. Financial stability can reduce stress and provide a safety net during tough times.
Personally, I think prestige is more important if the difference in money is only around ~ $200k annual salary. The respect, influence, and sense of accomplishment that come with a prestigious career can be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. However, if the financial difference is much larger, I believe the benefits of having more money start to outweigh the prestige.
What do y'all think?
I will say there is something to be said for being able to walk into any room and instantly command respect
It's whatever you choose to make more important that's more important.
A wise man once said you gotta make the money first, then when you get the money, you get the power, then when you get the power, then you get the women.

Id rather make 100k and no prestige than lot of prestige and being broke af. But I’d also choose making a mil + prestige over 10 mil without prestige

are there careers that are considered prestigious where you end up broke af at all though?
Money every day
Being put on a pedestal and a target of envy sounds awful to me
Much rather come off as regular and be rich

Plenty Artists that have recognition but are broke

Can't cap that's something money can't buy
Being respected/feared/polarizing has this certain effect on ppl, like kids to elders
I've hung around alot of rich folks and they ain't have that respect
Ppl would just use them for the money
But then ppl, who ain't have it but got that large respect
Ppl were too scared to even create an opportunity to use them
There's more interpersonal strength in having prestige/respect
Cause tbh almost anyone can get money/be rich
But not everyone can have or develop a personality so strong it commands that certain respect
Like I think last week there was this food truck festival
And there were 1000s of folks like all spread out across this huge festival ground and s***
And kid u not, no matter where I walked
People would stare
They saw me from a distance and would just stare
And it's not like am making noise or anything
Even on da streets, I'll c ppl look
Either inspired/happy/excited
Or just envious/angry/irritated
And without doing much, u trigger these emotions, I've always found that so powerful
And I c alot of rich folks walking and they ain't have that s***, they drown in da crowd

The way people react to genuine respect versus just seeing someone as a financial resource is definitely different. I’ve seen it too, some wealthy folks don’t necessarily get the same level of authentic respect or fear as those with a strong, commanding personality.
It’s interesting how prestige and respect can shape interactions and relationships in ways that money can’t. And you’re right, developing that kind of personality and presence is rare and takes a lot more than just financial success. I guess it really boils down to what kind of impact you want to have on others and how you want to be perceived.
