First of all the artists definitely deserve huge props for breaking records, let’s get that out the way
LNX recently broke the record for longest #1 ever not long ago. A whole bunch in between, really it’s so many records that have been broken the past couple years, it’s really hard to keep up with.
In the span of 2 weeks, two more records are being broken. Weeknd with longest top 10 song ever and Drake with #1 and #2 debut songs.
Credit to both again, but these records don’t pack the punch they use to. People point to this as evidence that “Blinding Lights” is one of the biggest songs ever.
At this moment in time to say that is absolutely SILLY. In time, sure, right now yes it’s a MONSTER of popularity but to say it legitimately is one of the biggest songs OF ALL TIME shows even the phrase “of all time” has lost its meaning now and people just throw that term out there.
Of course I see how people can say that because of the stats but these stats and records are not the end all, be all.
They’re based around arbitrary formulas, calculated because of the decline in CD sales so the method of calculating the charts literally isn’t what it use to be.
Also these records don’t indicate a song being the biggest ever, or one of the biggest ever. You need TIME for that. Would you say Blinding lights is bigger than Ignition Remix? If you say yes you’re either under 26 or foolish
Blinding Lights is literally the second biggest Billboard hit ever
Your anecdotal “it doesn’t feel that big” doesn’t mean anything
It’s sold 23m copies worldwide in 14 months and is on track to be diamond very shortly
It is objectively by every measure one of the biggest songs of all time
views and streams are manipulated and algorithms take away any value in holding records

yea back in the good old days nothing was manipulated
I mean the issue is you taking records more seriously than what they are meant to be. Simply a song that was able to achieve dominance in a specific period.
One Sweet Day was the longest #1 before Old Town Road, and that song was honestly forgettable af and most people would have absolutely never thought of it when thinking of 'the longest #1 song ever'. Even before streaming records were never some end all be all.
I’m not American, I’m telling you it absolutely is not. I said you need time for that. You can’t just point at charts and “sales” (really just streams converted to sales)
Ignition remix has been a cemented classic for close to two decades, relax yourself
HUH? How?
Because there’s more people with access to music, music is easier than ever to listen to, the actual people have more control over what’s showing up on the charts instead of the radio stations.

I never said it doesn’t feel that big, in fact I literally said “ITS A MONSTER OF POPULARITY”
You can’t point at billboard. Ignition has been a cemented classic for close to two decades. Blinding lights needs time
Ignition remix literally didn’t even go #1 lmfao
Trollz by 69 went #1. Wtf does going #1 mean?
No. Records hold more weight today tbh
Right I don’t get the narrative that somehow plays are lesser cuz of streaming. For the first time ever we’re actually taking into account what the vast majority of people are ACTUALLY listening to, and not what songs just happen to stay on the radio the longest

it doesn’t need time cause it’s already sold more than those songs in 14 months
Whether a song sells over two decades or over 12 months doesn’t make a difference what matters is the volume of sales
Absolutely. But not because of streaming but because people make up a new category for records every week. They just change the phrasing a bit
I mean even though streaming might’ve made it easier it’s still a big accomplishment in my eyes. Imagine if 50 cent , Britney Spears or even MJ was around during the streaming era
