D’Angelo has 1.5 good albums.
Voodoo is spectacular but Black Messiah & his other joint are pretty run of the mill for that genre & his talent group.

Brown sugar is run of the mill
It doesn't matter how long it's been since the last album if he's still an active rapper. Kendrick is, just like how SZA is still an active singer
Truthfully I really don’t care what others think about an artist because at the end of the day it’s subjective and I value my opinion overall. That being said if there was some metric where you could objectively quantify artists/rappers then no take your time and drop a project every 5 years or drop 5 projects in a year idc if the quality is there

Black Messiah is dope but only has 2 standout tracks. Another Life & Till it’s done.
Good grooves as well but tbh, you can hear those vibes at your local jazz club.
Because it’s Dangelo people don’t objectively rate the music.
Voodoo is forever a 10/10 no doubt.

Black Messiah is pretty run of the mill??
???????
For that era, we had Musiq Soulchild, Badu, Mint Condition, Jack Herrera, Tony Tone Toni, Eric Benet etc etc. they all made similar style of music.
Tbh y’all gotta hear the album but Eric Benets - A Day In The Life is equal to if not better than Brown Sugar.
He just won a Grammy and performed at the super bowl.
Nerd Kendrick censoring popo cancels that Super Bowl performance out and Grammies don’t matter
Black Messiah is pretty run of the mill??
For Dangelos talent level, yes. That’s if you’re ranking him as an S or A tier musician.
Like if it was an Anderson Paak joint, I doubt people would give it the praise we do today.
Dangelo has the mystique that trilogy weeknd once had.
Shows that, musics watered down. Dudes were releasing these type of albums all day in the 70s.

I just feel like it’s not run of the mill for the genre which I think you said previously
a lot of blending & vocal experimentation on the record
Brown Sugar would be his run of the mill project tbh
