I float around on the internet and in between the sections here and occasionally in other social media platforms, there seems to be a general discontent with the current state of gaming, TV/movies, music and even books.
Particularly for gaming some of the complaints I see is that games come out extremely half finished and mired in MTX. Is this sort of talk overblown or a product of nostalgia? Or is there some sort of larger issue at play here that’s affecting everything? I’m not too into the things I mentioned previously (besides music) so I just wanted general input from here.
I wouldn’t say gaming in particular is in a bad place, it’s that we are comparing it to an unrealistic and unsustainable high we grew up with. Fallout 2 and fallout 3 was like 10 years. Look at the difference of those two games. The progress in technology was massive. Games 10 years ago now don’t look that different from modern games. So I think that industry is more so settling out into an equilibrium. I also think all the art based industries are still going through growing pains with the internet, that they have been going through since the late 90s and that will continue for the foreseeable future.
i blew 2 bands on a PC awhile ago and i be scrolling through Steam waiting for something to jump out
never has been more over

in my eyes, its a constant fight for attention and virality
consumers don't really care about the quality of product as much as how much hype it has
so there's no payoff for the people who truly do take years to create something they think will stand the test of time
like @degenwokemoralist said, there's tons of great indie games, indie music, indie fashion brands, tech brands, phones, etc
but how will people even support them and prop them up if they aren't visible?
even the stuff that is so terrible it gets s*** on and becomes a meme is more profitable than a great product that doesn't reach for a gimmick
you just need to stop looking at the algorithm sometimes and dig by yourself
it's not even hard

yeah it seems like everything is more slanted to branding and marketing more than the actual content of whatever it is nowadays
maybe it was always this way but less noticeable though
Nothing was worse than the NFT era far as art goes you might have a point for entertainment though

I mean NFT’s are just a digital copyright, that’s stamped into history. It’s also brand new with a lot of people looking to exploit the interest to make a quick buck, so the artwork associated with it was very poor quality (there a couple exception like Beeple). Like the technology is interesting and probably will be incorporated in a helpful way to artists in the future. But what people saw I don’t think was an accurate reflection of visual arts at the time or what the purpose of the technology is.
whole world in a bad place

There was a lot of great stuff going on that got overshadowed by the NFT hysteria tbf. What was that like 2020-21?
Mass layoffs. Repetitive and low effort shows and music for quick cash grabs. Quality movies that are bombing in the box office and failing to make up their large budgets. Video games that take forever to make and are super expensive due to unnecessary graphical bloat that are also failing to meet their sales goals. Execs and uncreatives desperately tryna force AI into the arts and entertainment...
Yeah things are looking extremely s***ty lol

There’s hundreds/ thousands of great artists around the world making nfts
ppl just aren’t following s*** + the market has stayed down (I guess ai influx has greatly contributed to this)
It's in a good place if you want to create. Anyone with a cellphone can make listenable music or a watchable video. It's crazy how far we've come in that regard.
It's in a bad place if you want career level income. Too much competition. Too much precarity. Streaming splits f***ing you at one end, venue splits f***ing you at the other. More hobbyists than ever who can deliver a comparable product. It's easier to monetize in general though. A lot of people do more than music now.
It's in a good place if you want to consume. Everything is readily accessible and there's more of it than ever.
It's in a bad place if you want to sit with it. There's more churn than ever. People get bored more easily.
It's in a bad place if you want it to be ubiquitous. There's so much of it that everyone can be siloed off into their own bubble.
It's in a bad place for corporate labels. You'd much rather be a platform. It's harder to dictate trends. It's harder to stand out. It's harder to monopolize. You're better off pumping subscriptions to serve it than financing individuals and being invested in them.
