purple rain is probably the easiest starting point yea. the movie is corny as hell but as a minnesotan i love that s*** to death lol and it’s a cool part of his legacy. the album is flawless tho imo, possibly the greatest pop record ever made

i think that's what did it for me

    i was watching it like

    ..........

    course homie

i respect you having a respectful dialogue w all these people flaming you cause this is obv a hot take

at the same time tho it makes sense for someone younger than 25-30 (just assuming here based on the demographics) to connect more with the weeknd as he’s of our gen

that being said if you like The Weeknd that much once you dive in to prince’s stuff you might find a lot more to love, especially when you start seeing the influences

Op made this threads for people to s*** on the weeknd cuz ain't no way he actually thought that was a pertinent question

i'll be 28 in december but i do feel like this topic is speaking for younger people

when i look back, my parents never really played prince at all that i can remember

i think it's just a lack of exposure for me

    whereas michael was everywhere

seeing chapelle's show was my first exposure to prince tbh

i tried checking purple rain back then but it didn't do it for me

i've tried going back to it periodically hoping that it'll click but it hasn't yet

    with that said

last night i was listening to one of his joints somebody recommended in here while high

and i'd never heard his music high... i appreciated it more for sure

i plan to close my eyes and give it my full attention soon

No, Abel ain't close to Prince or MJ for that matter. They're not even really comparable, I like The Weeknd's music btw.

why don't you think they are comparable?

  • Nov 11, 2020

i do feel like the weeknd's live performance is the biggest gap between them rn for the record

  • Nov 11, 2020

    meaning he's not as good

why don't you think they are comparable?

Their careers weren't contemporary. They don't make similar music at all, Prince was always a mixed bag of different genres & MJ was the G.O.A.T. of Pop. But like I said Abel is on an incredible run & After Hours is my favorite Weeknd release after he blew up & made pop music.

Seems op is only considering subjective takes which means this thread was pointless.

subjectivity is what makes things interesting

because each of us has life experience that colors our opinions

if everybody agrees what's the fun in that

    also

    objectively

i am acknowledging how awesome prince is

    i'm just saying

i don't believe everybody who says they love his music

just like not everybody loves illmatic

    and that should be okay

That’s fair but you should’ve worded the thread differently, you would’ve received proper responses with the cost of less pages.

    Makes sense.

I would start off with his self titled album Prince first but you cant go wrong with Purple Rain. Sign O' the times after Purple Rain though

What are your merits for one artist being objectively better than the other? Objectives are tricky

it's one of the most interesting debates in art and life rn in my opinion

i wish star wars properly tackled this with kylo

    s*** could have been goat

    look at lebron rn

another deeper issue i'm trying to get across with this topic is

the power of narratives on our society

i feel like people just accept s*** as fact without finding out for themselves

i recognize a lot of young boys come on here and just say some wild disrespectful s*** just because

but i feel like i've proved that i'm being genuine and just trying to spark debate

    nahmean

    Influence, Impact, Songwriting, Consistency, Accolades.

Probably a few more that I’m missing but something on the lines of those.
