I understand the sgt pepper hype and the acclaim of this album a lot more

You have to live with the album for a while. it would help if you check out the earlier hits and other early 60s music so you can appreciate the giant leaps they had to make get to Pet Sounds .

No thats not vespertine

it was essentially one of the first real albums where every song mattered and was a part of the concept. before that, albums were mostly just full of filler aside from the singles and the songs had little to nothing to tie them together.

it was also original in pretty much showing how
pop music could be taken to the next level in terms of production and be taken more seriously. the instruments used and the scope of the project was just something that wasnt seen at the time.
