eh "better" is a matter of taste i don't like it personally

but the fact that a beat like that is possible is a technological achievement

It's been said already but the reason this song sounds like s*** is largely due to Swizz Beatz being unreasonably corny, see also Fancy lol

But to the OP's question: I think from a production standpoint, this was a weird time between the bass-heavy southern beats of the early to mid 2000s and the electro house influenced period of the early 10s. It sounds to me more like Swizz was f***ing around on an Electribe or similar with some stock synth sounds and drum samples and layered in a clip of a vocal passed through an EMS 2000 or similar (or any multi band vocoder) and that's about it.

We got really used to tinny, high end heavy mixes at the time with super bass heavy kicks and very little low end on the actual synth bass parts. I remember at the time testing out a subwoofer I s***tily installed in my car using A Milli, then trying out something like Bottoms Up and being sorely disappointed lol.

I'd guess that was part of the reason the 808s/MBDTF/Thank Me Later/Trilogy sound took off so much - it was so much more dynamic than what was on the radio at the time. Hell, it's probably why something like Quintana or Panda sounded like the f***ing future when it first dropped.

    No

Some of Kanye's best songs and moments from this era were made with those type of synthesizers + if everyone went intentionally retro like Kanye Kanye sound wouldn't have been special

People have got to stop trying to make some big brained monday morning quarterback take about s*** from 20 years ago that was perfect for its time lol if everything is avant garde timeless and futuristic then nothing is

The runners/dj toomp/shawty Redd type beats aged really well imo

Lmaoo Kanye himself had some classic songs on those type beats

Drake and Kanye kinda had a huge hand in getting rid of this type of beat too lmao #RapForMFsWhoDontLikeRap

  • They should've just looped an Aphex Twin song

  • GodzillaMinusOne

2000s production will age better than 2010s and 2020s production. Timbo, Kanye, Dre, Lil Jon etc... blows away the current crop of producers and the stagnant ass sound that has dominated for more than a decade now. 808s just fried most rap fans by now lol

ehh i mean if you cherry pick maybe but prod is way more layered and varied now

You could have made that beat in the late 2000's early 2010's

It's just whittling down the trends of SGP Lex Southside Shawty Redd Post 3 6 s*** into what we know works for sure trope wise relative to Osamason's scene in 2026

Gladiator and Nexus and s*** for the synths and 808 mafia kit for the drums, VST of your choice to distort the bass

There hasn't been a fundamental advancement in rap production since Lex Luger/Shawty Redd/Southside whoever you wanna give the credit for that sound to

does a classic shawty redd beat sound like a prime pierre beat

It sounds close enough to Lex and Sizzle

Pierre is great but Compare Shawty Red Lex Southside to Pharrell Timbaland Mannie Fresh

It was supposed to continue in that trajectory of jarringly different styles from what came before and the game just settled on all sounding like Pierre with the fast trap drums and similar type of melodies lol

For what it's worth Pierre and Dro are what derailed rap production to this day permanently for better or worse

Literally all rolling hi hat triplet flow autotune obviously trying really hard to fit into post 2015 tropes

I feel bad for you that you don't know of a rap game where niggas didn't do this to not instantly peep the above sentence

we r talking beats not flows or use of auto tune
these r all wildly dif from shawty red or lex or soutshide beats they just are in the lineage of trap/southern beats lol so they have hi hats and 808s
