do you genuinely believe mash ups and interpolations benefiting from nostalgia of the 2000's and 2010's is innovative

90s-00 is objectively the best era of hip hop. Early 2000s were ass and Blog era was cool i guess but it introduced too many artsy fartsy corny ass rappers. Now is just fast food s*** and psued rap

Bandcamp as a service is the best service for musicians. It's the most money an indie artist could get directly from their music, and everyone could release music and promote it freely and blogs would intentionally try to find obscure artists and promote them.

In a conversation I had with a friend he mentioned that he thinks it's easy to find new music on Tik Tok and it's more curated by the audience then ever. However labels are heavily involved. They were clearly involved in blogs too but, it felt like it was way better to be indie during that time. Now you have to pay for playlists and front page placements on streaming services and pay to promote your sound on Tik Tok (I'm sure people do this).

Another great thing about TikTok is the platform has the ability to take a super old track and make it popular again. It can revive careers and not just launch careers.

You’re right bandcamp is amazing marketplace for musicians. However the discover aspect kind of sucks.

At the peak Blog/SoundCloud era I was hoping bandcamp adopted similar features and really put a focus on the ability to embed the bandcamp player. That way u saw it on website as you search for music.

Labels get involved once there’s money to be made. Can’t blame them.

As a musician it was better to release music in the early 2010s because everyone could make music at home and release it independently. Back in the 90s and 2000s, it was harder to find music that wasn't on radio or MTV or record stores, and to be there you had to be promoted by a label.

I agree 90's is the golden era of hip hop, and that occasionally indie hip hop acts had a cult fan base (DOOM, Dr. Octagon, Deltron, DJ Shadow etc.) but in the early 2010s you have so many options and it was the best era for expression.

Now I think we lowkey regressed further into trends and formulas, to fit into the new social media and streaming world.

going thru random accounts and genres through bandcamp is always a fun rabbit hole but that s*** is obviously not for everybody
