I don’t think TDE was happy at all with the way Lay Wit Ya ended up performing reception wise and commercially. They were really banking on that one.

My theory is that this time they are trying to get Zay that same success that SZA found. SZA and Isaiah were in the exact same boat back in 2016 back when TST dropped. Fairly nitche.

Then somehow she managed to blow up on a level no one really saw happening. She went from a nitche act to being able to get Doja Cat in the top 10 of the hot 100. That’s a massive jump.

They tried it with Jay Rock too and found some success as well and now I bet they’re convinced this formula can work on anyone with the right song.

I think the main issue is Zay wants to make one type of music and is compromising for TDE who wants a certain sound/vibe for potential success.
