So do you support the actual music or nah? The journalism that comes from it could definitely be better, but I’m more inclined to say it’s the music that drives the journalism rather than the other way around.

Nah I’ve been saying for a minute I don’t think u can be pro black and actively support drill music like this. It’s a direct contradiction.

In the related vids they had a “All the people mentioned in Who I Smoke” video with pics of lil nine etc etc and it set in that this is the most morbid s*** imaginable

  • Einfinet

I’m not sure how music journalists should respond to this.. especially if they are white and Black people are both making and enjoying the ‘problematic’ content. I don’t think it would be a white journalist’s place to, like, admonish or teach the creators/consumers. If your arg is that they shouldn’t write about it at all, well, that is an option lol- but I just dunno what a preferable approach would be in this situation

I think it’s deeper than the journalist and stems from the music. But this type of music is a whole other conversation

We already got a sub Reddit called Duval county where they break down all the deaths and akademiks been covering our scene lately so it’s really the recipe for the Chicago scene 2.0 which is something I don’t wanna happen but it’s coming sadly. It’s violent as hell down here and the internet loves it

I always think of that Nipsey interview in Hot97 when he was breaking down how a street nigga is basically filled with self-hate (I’m paraphrasing). He basically said if you ask a nigga to describe his opp and who he wants to slide on to someone, you’re pretty much going to end up giving a description of yourself, from the way you dress, talk, the people you hang around etc. You’re killing yourself.

That s*** f***ing corny as hell. You just gotta blow and take over the narrative yourself cuz you actually from there. Not saying to involve yourself in any of that street s*** but highlight the positive and s*** like you been doing. Cuz them niggas don't care bout nun but a dollar + something to cure the boredom and they will exploit the f*** outta yall like watching yall kill eachother like gladiators if it come down to it.

That’s a fact. Drill music is deeper than music and street beef. That s*** a representation of self hatred in the black community and them not even knowing it. That’s generational mental issues that a lot of black men haven’t addressed yet

The way these so called “YouTube journalists” be documenting Florida nowadays be giving me the “war in chiraq” energy. It’s sad to see people took that nasty route for a quick buck.

It’s funny because I was very close to writing a Jacksonville rap article on complex but that s*** would read like a war in chiraq comic book and that’s not what I wanna do. It’ll be like I’m recalling gladiator fights or something. And it’s no way to write about Jacksonville rap without it coming out like that. This some s*** that shoulda stayed local but leaked out to the world and is playing out in front of everybody
