I love art, so I’ll take the artistic journey. Even though I think religion is sort of a cancer, Jesus is King takes you somewhere. X had this ability too. It’s not just oh, snare and clap please my lizard brain. I know this sounds elitist or pretentious but f*** man, I just often feel like the soul is missing from the generic s***. And if the soul ever leaves music, it’ll be a sad day. So far I don’t think it’s left Mr. West.

It does, in the sense that there’s pieces of the truth that pop up. But to me, that’s the thinnest piece of soul. It’s like you’re asking for scraps of soul at that point. It’s like one piece of a 12 bond horcrux at that point. It’s like if you stop watching the new Pixar movie after the first 30 minutes type s***. Point is, the substance that does happen to bubble up is not enough to distract me from how bland and flavorless the whole product is.

How so? This is just how I feel, maybe I’m wrong, maybe there’s something I’m not seeing in Lil Baby and all these thugger clones. But I can’t help feeling like there’s a whole lotta people tryna sound like everyone else these days.

Nah just hatin on people who don’t add anything new to music. The Bigger Picture is dope, he has potential. But does he have a classic? 🤨 Doubtful.

I see what you’re saying @op . I felt the same way until I actually listened to My Turn with an open mind and Baby actually has bars. My problem isn’t with the new guys but the sound itself. I just wish there was a different style of prod other than the minimal 808 trap drums. S*** got played out so hard and these niggas would be so much better if they had a different sound imo.

That’s why I’ll always value artists like Griselda, Brockhampton, Tyler, Rocky, Gibbs, etc over them

Hey thanks man, I’m glad you see where I’m coming from. I’m glad My Turn clicked with you, and I think you’ve done a good job of trying to understand what I’m on about, even as I phrased it sorta pretentious, or dismissive of hiphop as a whole.

Cause no one wants to be the guy saying rap as a whole is dead. I mean, we’re alive when Kendrick is in his prime, just think on that.

Yeah, a lot of it is the sound, and since I care so much about that, it’s hard for me to even get with the bars. Bars gotta have the heart to match, or it only does so much to my tastes, if I’m bein truthful. It could be fun. Lil Wayne is fun. But Lil Wayne has lots and lots of character. I’ll say, I think he has potential if he makes the right choices. The artists you mentioned are great.

  • This happens every damn generation. Oldheads didn't like when Kanye did 808's, either. Just appreciate the music fam. I don't f*** with Lil Baby like that but the dude had the top-selling album of 2020, obviously people vibed with it and thought it had substance if that is the case

Correct. But Ye’s taste is not my taste. Geeze, I’m just now realizing I didn’t intend for this to be a Lil Baby hate thread. But I did want to use Lil Baby as a symbol of popular music, in contrast with Kanye lol.

When I catch myself not liking certain things, I realize I’m just getting older and it’s not my moment any more. Let the kids like what they like. They hated on Kanye too. It’s new, and different. Not better, or worse. It’s too early to tell if any of the new artists will transcend like Kanye did. Let them have some time to grow
