Look at a joint like The Message by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five..yeah beat is dope and timeless but what elevated the song n hugely influential in where the genre has went is the raps

Beats starting the genre doesn’t mean the genre didn’t adapt. There’s a reason HipHop isn’t JUST beats anymore and it has niggas rhyming over it

Hip Hop would not be as popular as it is now if it was just beats and that’s a fact

Rapping is obviously important, but if I had to pick one I’m picking a great beat, especially in todays era of subpar rappers

Most of these rappers you guys push are completely average lyrically so I don’t see why me calling beats important is controversial

Ironically, kids who started listening to hip hop in the 10s put lyrics on this huge pedestal to seem like hip hop purists. Lyrics are one of the 3/4 important aspects of a hip hop song, not the primary one.

Future isn’t the greatest lyricist but he’s far superior to baby because it’s about how you say it and not what you’re saying

I like rap. I like great lyrics. The perfect hip hop song is when a rapper can dominate a great beat, make it theirs, and split some crazy s*** on it

The problem with you new niggas is that you only value one aspect of rap. Beats are just as important (if not more) as lyrics. Sure, there are FEW rappers who can make a s***ty beat sound good with just their lyrics, but that’s never gonna be a preference. A good beat is what makes a song so replayable. Ignoring beats doesn’t make you the hip hop purist you want to be.

I don’t want just raps. and though it’s my preference, I don’t want just beats either. I need the whole load. Why settle for just half?
