Episode 6. This episode was really enlightening surrounding some of the industry politics in his career. The pressure the label was putting on him to get a hit just to put an album out had him depressed and completely uninspired which clearly affect the quality of cole world. This was felt when hov told cole he don't think he can make it while self producing which had him tearing up.
The episode had a nice inner look at cole and hov's relationship. Hov made a lotttt of questionable decisions like him not feeling workout but loving that bullshit sean garrett song was crazy, if that song release it would be a bad stain on his career. So cole made the right call telling hov he can't go through with it or he'll feel like a sellout, surprised Jay was as understanding about that.
The part about how cole and ib had to work Work Out at radio stations to get plays really puts in perspective how much of a dead art that this atp for better or worse
As for cole world, it's been a minute since I heard some of these songs. It's still mid with some gems here and there like lost ones, breakdown, never told, sideline story but honestly I appreciate it more today after the episode.
Even though i knew some of the label bs never knew it was that much, they pretty much butchered the album from the sequencing and the force song attempts, cutting nothing last forever is also a crime
Episode did show that discourse around first week sales was still a very much thing back then, cause it had Cole stressing he was gonna flop. The album still blew expectations for first week sales by a lot but I get why cole felt conflicted bout the numbers. Because bro really wanted that illmatic debut but was too burnt out to get it. He said today he accepts it because 2pacalypse wasn't consider that but pac is still a legend
He also said something interesting about he felt so displeased about cole world he rushed into the next album and try to stunt on some "I'm already working on the next". He said a clear sign a rapper isnt happy with their album is if they mmediately starts working on the next one, s*** made me think of uzi
