Damn u hate him fr i thought you would like this

Oh nah, while I'm flattered you would think that, I'm the opposite.

See, the thing about the Jacob Colliers of the world is that all the technological proficiency in their work and skill makes it semi-robotic. It's "too perfect" if that makes sense. It's no soul or a sense of feeling behind it.

The singers that I've always grown to like weren't always the most technologically proficient BUT what they lacked in "perfect pitch" or "runs" or great 4-5 part harmonies they made up for in SOUL.

Is Gil-Scott Heron the greatest singer ever? No, but whenever you listen to Pieces of a Man or Winter In America you FELT that s***,

Is Badu the greatest singer ever? No, but once again, whenever she sings, you FEEL that s***.

I don't feel nothing listening to this cat.

Now if you wanna hear somebody that can just make their voice an instrument while still being engaging, I HIGHLY recommend Peter Collins

tl;dr: My issue with Jacob is the same issue I have with AI being involved within music. if AI singing was ever a thing, Jacob Collier would be the living epitome of it.

    I wouldn't even say he's talented, he's knowledgeable

He knows a ridiculous amount about musical theory but barely ever applies it in a way that's emotionally resonant

It's telling that most of the people who describe themselves as fans of him are also music students, you can admire the construction of his work if you know what he's doing, but there's none of the immediate no-context-needed emotional reaction that the best music has

Just read a review of one of his newest singles some person made on rym and it captures my thoughts on this mf perfectly ngl

outside of pockets of greatness (mostly on his skills of arrangement, not composition, as in how he reinterpreted others’ music, not creating his own) he is the quintessential example of bourgeoisie excellence, someone who has had access to the finest training from the youngest of ages but shows that that does not translate into the talent to say literally anything of substance with your music or art, this one being one of his worst tunes yet

I just got put onto this song and it’s been on replay. so good man

  • good to know his voice is just as annoying singing as it is speaking

  • Jacob Collier is an enigma for me personally because I don't get much from his music personally but I can tell just from his interviews that he knows a lot about music theory and that's def respectable but it gets annoying seeing most of the online response to his music (esp his yt comments) being like "if you're a musician you would know how crazy and impressive he is!!!" and its like "do i need to get a master's degree in classical musical composition to enjoy music"

that being said he's credited in the composition and has backing vocals on SZA's Good Days which is such an emotional and beautiful song to me off SOS so idk maybe he just needs to work with the right people to reign in his musical ideas for me to like them

One of my fav posts and I aint even get into how bruh interacted with one of the homies. and nah he’s not a mean guy…but he’s very kumbaya-based when it comes to the topic of race which considering alot of his sauce is from legit church niggas…is interesting
