Not defending James Gunn in any way here, but most celebrities in the arts have earned less then the capital they produce. Really need to look at CEOs, investors, bankers, and the ones exploiting capital before you look at the wealthy who earned their capital via labor. in the truest sense even the highest earning actors are having their capital exploited by large corporations.

The only reason movies are funded is because huge firms are flush with cash they can waste on them. America dominated cinema post-WWII because europe's economy was in ruins. Art is a bubble on an economy built on exploited labor. You have to have a leisure class to pursue it.

Directors and actors are the most handsomely compensated members of the crew. Look at the overpriced corporate theaters themselves which keep pennies on the dollar, the corn subsidies alone that account for a sizable portion of their revenue, the poverty wages for their staff, etc. You can look at the cheap consumer electronics that allow VOD to exist, consider the labor there, or the internet infrastructure that should be public. Not to mention the race to the bottom for tax breaks on movie productions or tax abatements on theaters.

So yes, while the "labor" is the exploited part of any operation (see Marvel greenscreening extras to avoid union wages), there's more labor involved in movies than the cast and crew, the initial capital investment is from surplus labor hoarded elsewhere, and there's also infastructure/taxes to consider.
