is there a name of the kinda late 90s early 2000s core, liminal space, tv, early computers genre of horror? this is it, theres a few indie horror games that blow up that are it, five nights is kinda it, skinamarink. i feel like many people are gonna be tapping into this stuff as kids who grew up at that time begin making horror

I label it under a***og horror and I agree. That subgenre is posed to explode. Kane Pixels, a YouTube creator who made the famous Backrooms videos, is making an A24 Backrooms movie. I think that will be very good.
It’s a very interesting genre though because it can miss its audience. Skinamarink is an example where if you don’t have the building blocks for it to affect you then it can be 100 minutes of boredom. It was effective for me, but def not for everyone. When it does hit though, it is incredibly effective. If I could direct two horror movies, one would be grunge, The Crow type vampire movie and the other would be a***og.

Like creepy pasta stuff?

Guess I've called it creepypasta inspired in my head, but I think "analog" horror is the newer term going around for it. A lot of it is directly inspired by all of those YouTube/forum kinda pastas (i.e. Channel Zero, Slender Man film, the huge aesthetic that pervades indie PC horror that gets streamed a lot)
I think the first one that really grabbed me when I was younger was the "Marble Hornets" s***. It was like a crazy long Slenderman found footage TV show with a big ARG and s***, I remember getting super sucked in. There was a whole arc/"season" where homie was getting chased across the country by Slenderman and his operatives, ended up getting his mind wiped and stuck in a empty endless hotel s*** blew my mind as a youngin, definitely set the stage for the whole "backrooms" concept imo
That being said, skinamarink didn't hit for me, I feel like we're all going to the world's fair deserved all of its praise. I'm beside myself excited for this new joint, has a chance to be a generational kino without exaggeration
most anticipated of the year rn fs - go watch world's fair if u haven't yet.
I watched this over the weekend. Cool that Alex G did that movie as well. They must be somewhat close/connected.
Movie was good for literally just being 2 actors. I can see the vision.
Hopes are riding high on this
phoebe bridgers and snail mail are in this movie
