I'm not sure if you are speaking on Christianity when you say this but I feel compelled to reply seeing how I too used to question my faith in the Bible on this topic.

Slavery in the Bible referred to bondservants. When your nation was conquered in Biblical times it was either death or enslavement (I assume out of fear of retaliation. If a nation of people are conquered it would be unwise to just let them go free even if they were just innocent civilians).

Also if you owed a debt and couldn't pay it back you worked it off through servitude. The Bible gave very clear instructions that slaves should only be slaves for 7 years. Also the Bible was very clear that "manstealing" (aka kidnapping people and enslaving them) was against God's will and punishable by death.

My point being that saying that Christianity justifies slavery is a dangerous and incomplete thing to imply if you aren't going to speak on the context to which The Bible speaks on.

The institution of slavery that we know of in America is nowhere near context the Bible speaks on.

Slaves were kidnapped from Africa, they weren't slaves out of debt or prisoners of war. The Bible does not condone this.

Slaves, both men and women, were raped. The Bible does not condone rape.

Slaves were slaves for life. The Bible does not condone this.

Also when slavemasters would give Bibles to slaves and use the Bible to justify slavery many were known to rip out the book of Exodus out of fear that the story of the Israelites in Eygpt would inspire rebellion. So these weren't honest Christians, these were people manipulating God's word for their benefit.

In general, we shouldn't be quick to take verses of The Bible out of context. Jesus Christ is the living embodiment of The Bible/The Word. Just studying his character makes it clear to us that God would not be happy with the institution of slavery that took place in America.

Its the same when people use the Bible to justify being hateful towards/persecuting gay people. God hates sin but does not hate the sinner and we should reflect that. One of the 9 fruits of the Spirit is gentleness. We shouldn't embrace or excuse sin but we also shouldn't be hateful towards someone who does (i.e. calling a gay person a f*ggot which some Christians still seem to think is okay sadly).
