No this an't a Wavy Santana Thread, and yes I said it, Jay Z is overrated, here's why:

    • He doesn't really have the star power people thinks he has, he's been overshadowed by Em, 50 and Wayne in his prime.

    • Niggas talk about his pen but he has bit lines from Biggie for years, even copied his cadence on some of his songs too.

    • People claim 4:44 is one of his most critically acclaimed albums but he had to fix numbers to go fake plat & he couldn't even go on tour because those same fans weren't showing up to his shows.

    • Him and his wife had to fake a whole cheating scandal to sell records

    • He claims he's for black culture but he has worked with the biggest culture vulture in Lyor Cohen, donated to an organization cuts the hair of black people and sell it for profit and Now he's working with the NFL after making his "protest" by not performing at the Superbowl.

    • Niggas claim he's influential but he hasn't influenced a single rapper, music wise.

    1) He doesn't really have the star power people thinks he has, he's been overshadowed by Em, 50 and Wayne in his prime.

    How?

    2) Niggas talk about his pen but he has bit lines from Biggie for years, even copied his cadence on some of his songs too.

So discredit his entire discography because he paid homage to biggie on a few songs? got it.

    3) People claim 4:44 is one of his most critically acclaimed albums but he had to fix numbers to go fake plat & he couldn't even go on tour because those same fans weren't showing up to his shows.

What does sales have to do with critical acclaim?

    4) Him and his wife had to fake a whole cheating scandal to sell records.

    Some lovely s***posting right here.

    5) He claims he's for black culture but he has worked with the biggest culture vulture in Lyor Cohen, donated to an organization cuts the hair of black people and sell it for profit and Now he's working with the NFL after making his "protest" by not performing at the Superbowl.

What does this have to do with his music?

    6) Niggas claim he's influential but he hasn't influenced a single rapper, music wise.

This is quite possibly the only "argument" you have, and even this is flawed. Everybody wanted to be Jay, maybe not musically but career-wise and business-wise. Nobody could do what he did musically because he and Nas had that s*** locked, so anyone who tried to do it wouldn't be noticed. With that being said, you can look at dudes like Fabolous, Cam'ron, and a whole bunch of new york rappers from the mid 00's who tried to emulate his style.

I am a Jay stan, and I agree with this.

Jay is little more than a very clever s***-talker that can flow. But he's so slick that he can con you into thinking he's the best. He's also incredible at making you invest in his career because of his ability to address personal and relatable, even if mundane, s*** in a profound way -- this is something you can tell Drake learned from Jay early on.

Put Jay next to real elite rapper's-favorite-rappers like Redman, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, BDK, Rakim, and of course BIG, and he gets dusted every time.

As far as his business s***, an argument can be made that he's just being pragmatic; only two things have the ability to change existing order in America, and that is money or the bullet box. By buying up these franchises and institutions like the NFL, he can tip the scales in the favor of black folks without ever firing a single shot or relying on the 'goodwill' of some f***ing politicians. But he could just be in it for self, only time will tell.

Nah fam you might be talkin' about his business tactics but this doesn't correspond to his art.

to me he's always been overrated but mostly lived up to his reputation on 4:44 and AWT. Still think his capitalism talk is corny tho

  • Oct 17, 2020

Idk man once you know his story leading up to and during Reasonable Doubt, it’s hard not to consider him a legendary man. His hustle is what influenced the streets, his steez and effortless attitude influenced the culture, and his music influenced artists to create expressive and personalized hiphop. 50 wanted to be Jay Z. Kanye wanted to be Jay Z. Wayne wanted to be Jay Z. He’s the definitive figure head of modern hiphop because he encompasses everything about it.
