the only time hes overrated is when randos that live in the middle of nowhere go online n act like hes an untouchable god just because they read a few oldhead posts that are still stuck on the stoop

only in ny, and even outside of that he has never been the most popular in a year

    still a great rapper tho

I see so many casual music listeners have this opinion.

I feel people have this thought in their head that he's boring and want to make a hot take, but once you go back and see all the hits he has you realize how wrong you are. They forget about songs like dirt off your shoulder or big pimpin. Just great hip hop

Songs like Big Pimpin and Dirt Off your shoulder make him the greatest rapper of all time?

Cause that's what they are toting him as ....

I personally don't think he's the greatest of all time, but he is one of them.

He was a lyricists who wasn't corny and made big hits that have stood the test of time. Something thats rare and only a handful of hip hop artists have done. Most other rappers have to pick one or the other

People really trying HEAVY with revisionist history lately

It's complicated and depends on who you ask.

I notice that foreigners and non-rap fans tend to severely underestimate Jay, especially if they're Eminem stans.

Jay sometimes gets underrated by Southern and West Coast rap fans too.

People keep bringing up the "youth" but the youth just flat out ignore Jay-Z as an artist these days and don't spend much time bashing him. If you look at the main videos that discredit Jay-Z, it tends to not even come from the youth. Big Gipp and Faizon Love, for example, aren't "youth."

On the flip side, certain Jay "fans" d***ride his image and his reputation more than his actual music. Their real reason for calling him "the GOAT" has less to do with his music and rapping and more to do with him being a billionaire, marrying Beyonce, living a lavish lifestyle, and having the ultimate "CEO/boss" image.

These types of Jay fans will act like every other album the nigga dropped was "classic" when, in reality, Jay has always been very inconsistent in his career. And some of his songs aged like sour milk while others are very timeless.

I know people like to big up the Volume albums on here but there's definitely a number of songs on them that aged very poorly despite being on the same CDs as some of his most timeless joints.

Jay really only has 5 albums with truly cohesive themes and consistent quality: RD, BP, Black Album, AG, and 4:44.

The rest of Jay's albums are either meh(BP3, KC, MCHG) or they're solid but are structured more like playlists(Volume albums, BP2, Dynasty).

Jay is a top tier lyricist and emcee but, musically, Hovengers do tend to forget that Jay wasn't always like his post 4:44 self and he used to be the poster child for inconsistency, materialism, bragging about sales/chats, not acting his age, etc.

So, I see it both ways. Jay's still in my top 5 though.

I don't love every song like I do other favorites but he's still a legend. Even if he only ever dropped Reasonable Doubt.
