Man,Jimmy Iovine is the definition of a dirty record exec. The only reason Interscope made Death Row records and let Suge run because white execs like Iovine didn’t want to deal Hip Hop artist and their problems. Suge was basically a high level flunky because he had to handle all the scandals that came with Death Row.

he might be dirty but the reason you gave doesn’t make him so. that just makes him smart and a person who empowered Blacks to handle Black music.

It makes him smart but at the same, they didn’t really care about any artist on Death Row. You couldn’t go to Jimmy with your problems,Suge was your boss on Death Row,and he did a lot of f***ed up s***. For one, there was no pay schedule whatsoever,Suge payed artist when he felt like it,that’s why Snoop was basically broke when he left DR.

And then second,Pacs comeback basically saved DR from decline cause Suge was basically using Pacs money to pay for everything, including artist and personal matters that had nothing to do with Pac. That’s why 2Pac was broke when he died, and if anyone had a problem with it,they had to address Suge, not the actual execs at Interscope, and Suge felt like he owned those dudes.

DR was just ran so incorrectly just off the fact that white people really didn’t want to touch gangster rap but they knew it made money.

Yes,Death Row was created to keep s*** off Interscopes hands but they wanted it to be as controversial as possible at the same time.

I don't actually know but wasn't Jimmy a good creative producer back in the day?

That's the story that seems to get told at least.

Or was it more a case of talented artists (Bruce, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty) carrying him?

  • Mar 25, 2022

I'm sure he knew who it was. After all

He is owes Jimmy Iovine for his career. It was Dr. Dres and his idea to put Game in G-Unit and that's what what helped in blowing him up.

I feel like a dude like Jimmy saw Pac dying as a positive cause that was more resources for Eminem and he was white,so he was more marketable and he didn’t come with gang baggage. Aftermath and Dre would’ve gotten dogged out by Interscope if Dre didn’t discover Em.

I'm not an Em fan and his whiteness made him way more successful than he should have been but didn't Pac die years before Dre signed Em?

  • Mar 25, 2022

Whole thread is about race like Dre wouldn't have tossed his keys thinking he was a valet. It's business as usual

Em has been working with Dre since 97,so it was a yr after Pac died but at the same time,Interscope was still feeling Pacs death. So imagine how Iovine feels when he finds a white rapper that can actually rap and they have every resource in the book to push him cause of the void Pac left.

I think Jimmy was definitely talented on that front,I think he actually understood the world of rock(he was an engineer if I’m not mistaken)

  • Mar 25, 2022

I'm pretty sure he did both. Plus it seems like he was good at curating songs (like what he did on Because the Night for Patti Smith), which is perfect A&R. The actual A&R bit a lot of A&Rs f*** up which is developing the artists you've actually signed.

So maybe he really is a visionary exec/A&R/producer. Maybe he's lucky and coasted off the people around him.

It feels hard to tell when the positive way of viewing him is pushed so heavy by projects like that doc they had together. Like even the way he left Suge alone to run Death Row as an imprint-you could see it as irresponsible and exploiting artists' real life problems while never having to get close to them personally. Or you can see it as him giving people like Trent Reznor, Dre, Suge, Pac and Snoop more creative control than more over involved execs who get in the way

But did Em really fill Pac's void?

I kinda get the argument with people who say Jay filled Biggie's shoes both positively and negatively. Personally I think they're both geniuses who could have coexisted like they did on Brooklyn's Finest

But I can see how Jay blew up more after Biggie's death and came from a similar perspective with similar fans

But it feels like Em and Pac is two different worlds. It's arguable no one really filled that void since. Maybe 2001 or Kendrick. Maybe Ye-but he's not west coast and I think that maters, and he's not as good at actual rapping lol. Pac was such a one off in terms of how much he could do as an artist
