Starting this list at 5, I have microtonal electronic producer Sevish’s album Bubble.
He’s likely the most popular, well known microtonal producer. And his music has a particular sound to it because microtonal music fills the gaps between keys with more keys. A basic 12-note octave can be turned into 55-notes or 100-notes.
At number 4, I have The Misadvice Of Junie by Portraits Of Tracy.
The 17 year old prodigy made this album all by himself. Surrounding the albums skits dealing with school and girls are some of the most interesting songs I’ve heard by a more traditional rapper. Not only rapping. But singing too. There’s a blend of Hip Hop and Pop that takes me back to the blog rap days of the late 00’s/early 10’s.
Number 3 belongs to Ouri’s beautiful album, Frame Of A Fauna.
I happened to stumble across the Montréal native producer, multi-instrumentalist’s album a few weeks back and got sucked into its distinct sound. At times the album is bare or lush, either with classical instrumentation or electronic.
Number 2 is going to Mood Valiant by Hiatus Kaiyote.
What an album. Just some of the most beautiful singing ever over top some of the funkiest, smoothest Jazz/R&B. Lead singer Nai Palm’s lyricism is always poetic as a f*** and this was a return to music after battling breast cancer so it had an emotional feel mixed with a new love for life.
Think I’m gonna give the number 1 spot to Butterfly 3000 by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Crazy how the top 2 are Australian bands.
This neo-psychedelic record is amazing. The whole thing is this cohesive work built around modular synths and odd time signatures. It just feels like pure ecstasy. The tracks blend into each other and there’s times where they even throw in a little throwback/foreshadow to a previous/next song. And then the videos really seal the deal for me on this one. All ten tracks received some of the trippiest visuals. There is an “Ocular Edition” on streaming that is just the whole album thru videos.
