Hate speech can be defined as calling for violence on groups
It usually has to have the factor of calling for violence

Plenty of public figures have gone on racist, homophobic anti-jewish rants but it didn't fit the definition of hate speech

Mel Gibson for example, definitely hates Jews but I don't recall him asking for Jews to be bombed or harmed or discriminated against

Ye has held these anti-jew sentiments for a while but crossed a serious line with the defcon tweet, not clarifying it and doubling down with more bigotry

Afaik, he has never called for violence against black people despite harboring resentment towards the Black community for whatever reason

I'd like to point out that some countries will fine an individual for hate speech

Meaning that some countries have legally introduced definitions: where hate speech begins and ends,

Numerous scholars and lawmakers find that those definitions fit the moral landscape their country wants to achieve, ideally

In France for example u can get fined for calling people racial slurs,hate speech or denying recognized genocides

(Look up the John Galliano scandal)

Just like any law in the West if people wanted to protest it they legally could do so

However they seldom do since those laws derived from a general sense of morality within the population based on it's History

The only people ever conflating the condemnation of hate speech (wether it be legally or morally) with restricting freedom of speech seem to always do it to justify someone being a bigot

It's very nasty and disrespectful to everyone's intelligence to try and play the normalization of hate speech and bigotry as a noble fight for freedom of speech, the same freedom of speech that has never been in jeopardy especially not in the USA......

Nothing Ye said is implicitly violent or against Jews. Implicitly violent speech is saying something like “ I’m going to blow up a synagogue tomorrow”.

And he wasn’t given the chance to clarify or expound upon what definitely is a suspect and eyebrow raising statement.

All the “he’s been on the Jew hate train for a while” narratives are coming from known Kanye detractors who also seemingly withheld this information until this opportune moment which imo casts light on the validity of it somewhat. But hey it could be true.

There’s definitely an epidemic of the alt right co-opting free speech to defend hatred. It’s insidious af bc the chain reaction that’s caused is that every conversation has to have a hard line now. There’s no room for debate or compromise on either side. Public discourse is now completely polarized. Lynch mob mentality has firmly taken over.

You spit a lot of truth in your post but not everyone who’s observing this Ye stuff from a perspective other than “burn his life to the ground” is an alt-right sympathizer and making it seem that way further empowers that segment to claim more bodies in the idealistic battleground, which is of course their goal.

All of that of course not touching the absurdly hypocritical actions of JPM which is the topic of the thread in the first place.

You literally spent a whole post defining hate speech and then using Mel Gibson as an example of someone who didn’t use hate speech, just anti-semitism. And you felt that Ye could be banned from the banks specifically because he used hate speech while the others didn’t. Am I wrong in understanding that you believe by definition “hate speech” is worse than regular biased speech? And that what Ye said was thus worse than what Mel Gibson said?

Like I don’t doubt he’ll say some crazy s***. I don’t even doubt that he’s probably said some wild s*** behind closed doors. But I’ve also watched this guy be one of the least violent rappers in the 21st century and don’t believe he’s on the verge of any kind of vitriolic violence against anyone. And I don’t see how anyone could.

The feeling reminds me of people saying that Travis Scott sacrificed kids to Satan at that concert, while there were numerous and egregious failures at every level above him in regards to that festival venue. It’s just the hypocrisy and the blind outrage that gets me.
