What they don’t tell you is he’s getting organic bullshit while the rest of the inmates eating some good genetically modified grub

Dudes just read organic and think they got him eating prime organic kosher steak or something. That bozo eating corn and nuts

This is one of the few of these people I actually kind of feel bad for.

He has interviews from before all of this where he’s talking about how beings communicating on a frequency that normal humans can’t perceive are telling him to do this s***, which is why he calls himself the “shaman”. Like... he just sounds legitimately schizophrenic.

There’s a lot of overlap with the super deep end conspiracy stuff and mental illness.

It's not even about the conspiracy stuff tbh.

A lot of people just aren't able to handle what would otherwise be the usual daily stress of life (job, financial situation, personal/family life issues, school, future prospects/anxiety) combined with the current information climate brought on by web2.0 publishers. For a lot of people, what used to be a relaxing way to wind down or mindlessly blow off steam to relieve daily stress — surfing/interacting on the internet — has become an entirely new, relentless stress inducer, particularly when politics are involved.

They get hooked on the tribalistic interactions online and it goes from being an escape to a de facto priority in their minds throughout the day. We've had several younger patients at my hospital in past couple months alone who have completely 180'd in their behavior towards family/friends — one even went from being ready to finish undergrad to blowing off classes and assignments. And these people's relatives have each said the sane thing: "I swear I really feel like this all kicked off and they began changing shortly after I noticed them getting into long-winded arguments with people about politics on facebook. Its like that whole online battleground started consuming their lives."

And there's really nothing that exists to help the people who lack the proper self-control to prevent themselves from mindlessly increasing their stress and on-edge reactionary behavior. We've have lock-out features like "screen time" for years, but that's a voluntary solution people have to want to use and learn how to actively resist temptation. (And aside from the negative impact on mental health, there's also the damaging effects long-term modern screen use has shown to have on our eyes.)

Its actually kind of a blessing that the patients have come to our facility (including those brought there involuntarily): I'm sure a week or so without their phones or internet access, in a group setting talking with actual people and re-learning social realities, has a really positive effect on them. If not just for their stay in the hospital, hopefully something they carry with them when they leave to form better habits.

    This is incredibly concerning.

I’ve definitely experienced pretty stable people get pretty out there since this pandemic started and they were, I’m assuming, spending a lot more time online and on social media.

I can only imagine how it could twist up someone who isn’t well to begin with.

You’ll do and say whatever you need to to not be locked up too

Lock his ass up and give him regular food.

He could be at home eating what he wants. But he decided to misbehave.

I mean we've kinda already seen what can happen with the people affected by this new stress factor who are also not mentally stable to begin with. From all corners of ideology/belief backgrounds — from the hyper-right fanatics like that "loser killer" from a few years back, to the militant vegan mysticism lady who went into youtube's HQ offices and started shooting because she was convinced they deleted her channel and were personally out to destroy her.

Its bad all around, and its not just politics. Everything about virtually any hobby, habit, worldview, or lifestyle is cranked to 11 when you form a dependency on the internet and its "social" communities — needing both the uncritical support of those who agree with you, and the stimulating guarantee of there always being someone to oppose you on any subject to have "arguments" with (which have really just become "last word" endurance matches to see who will fold and stop responding first — the way a "loser" is often determined.)
