Very good take imo. Yuji character developed through this trauma but this cog mentality definitely isnt growth. Its very depressing and low thinking your life is supposed to be a small piece in a never ending system.

The first legitimate growth he has is when he finds Higurama

I only wish Mahito's theme was used more prominently in the episode because it's such a hype track

I fully disagree but thats what good shows invoke

during his fight with choso Yuji felt bad about his ability to make an impact but had a revelation that even just taking out choso by any means is impact enough. He wouldn't truly be useless

Then during this last episode, it is almost a final form of that mindset. Todo told him he will find something to make those deaths worth it and being apart of a greater purpose is that. A cog in a machine is fine cause he is still a part of the machine.

Big ideals about trying to find fitting deaths for everyone is ambitious and crippling but he has found meaning in what he has always been doing

that feels like growth to me , seeing a character battle with existentialism to an extent and finding his own answer

We are all technically small parts of a never-ending system. acceptance of that is powerful if you can enjoy what you can do in that framework

it is maturing however keeping the system alive sets out the next generations of sorcerers to have to suffer in the same ways Yuji, megumi and co have to.

Cog mentality is what Todo and Nanami kind of preach but the latter actively does it in a form of desperation because he cant help himself see other people be the wheel in the machine even tho he is able to. Thats why he came back (Haibara is at fault at that) even though he despises the system.

However I really disagree that this is growth and the point the story will ultimately arrive at.

Mainly because there are 2 certain extremely influential characters that would disagree with it and draw the ultimately next conclusion which is destroying the system

so it might just be a difference in interpreting growth. I think maturing is growth. All growth to me doesn't have to relate to a giant optimistic goal since most of us in our own lives won't do that either. but I do see where you're coming from and have some insight on future events that your referencing

My problem is people make it all seem like a recent factor in Yuji's growth. JJK as a world has always been bleak. Yuji since the beginning has been seeing people torn apart by curses, he's been losing people to curses, Mahito specifically loves and lives to f*** with dude.

It's not so much him becoming happy to be a cog in a machine. It's him finally coming to terms to defeat curses he must stop trying to reason, stop questioning motives, and merely erase them as easily as Mahito will erase a human. Which I am happy to see, Talk No Jutsu killed Naruto for me, I wish we could've seen Naruto get some edge to him truly.

What hit Todo’s arm, the domain sure fire hit or some other technique? Mahito did put the domain away before the hit so I’m confused

It’s still torn too, there’s a permanent scar there.

Semi-related, but I wish Gege had kept the giant gash going across Yuji's face. Now it's just a small scar on his eyebrow.

Must have been the sure hit since he needs to touch somebody. Todo did use a simple domain which was probably why it wasnt an instakill

It was the sure hit, if you watch it again, it says Todo popped his simple domain and Yuji went straight to Mahito and on top of all that Mahito was faster than both because of his high from the black flash.
Todo fr got lucky it was only his hand that got f***ed, that simple domain saved his life

Yujis cog mentality is in my opinion not mature and fleshed out (altho youre right it depends a bit on the definition here)

Yuki and Gojo also arent naive. The difference between them and Nanami, yuji now is that they realized it might never be them who will achieve their grandious goal. But aslong as people will constantly only try desperately to maintain the system s*** will never change. So both of them chose to teach smart students who will open a new path so that one day the issue will be actually fixed.

There are honestly countless examples in jjk where we have already seen them influence the world far outside of their own scope of action
