I’m just gonna say this, its hard to praise and champion this era just off the fact that when I grew up (mid-late 2000s)there were still regional sounds going on in Hip Hop and Pop music was still willing to actually experiment. Someone from NY could literally come down South and experience a whole other region of music and vice versa.

For everyone to sound the same nowadays just really represents a decline in culture, let alone Hip Hop.

that’s a good point and part of why I think the early ‘10s was a great time for hip-hop

It was the brief moment where there were still differences in regional sound that hadn’t been homogenized out of existence, but the internet allowed people to listen in depth to the music of any and every region more easily than ever before

(Ofc internet and s*** existed in 2000s too but it wasn’t as effortless to access music thru it as it became in the 10s)

Ofc as this process went on eventually the regional sounds were blended into sameness, making it kind of irrelevant that you could listen to artists from across the country with a few keystrokes cuz it all sounds the same anyway

It’s crazy how quickly it happened too. I remember when Spotify first became a thing my freshmen/sophomore year in 2011/2012, only girls were really using it and they would have hella deep playlists for studying lmfao. Most guys were still torrenting/mixtapes and using their phones local files or iCloud

I remember getting Apple Music in 2015 and then streaming just becoming the norm for everyone. That really might be why things don’t feel so special cause it’s hard to discover something nowadays and get everyone to pay attention at the same time for an extended time

Streaming took the eventful-ness/thematics out of albums if you ask me. Like, everything now is just way to digital,I’m talking covers don’t even have the same qualities anymore. And you gotta remember when you could follow an artist from his mixtape days, reading all the magazines, getting all the magazines with them on the cover, then they finally make it on TV,video and single getting spinned everywhere and then there album drop.

First artist I really experienced that with was Cudi. Albums had way more in common with movies cause you finally get to see an artist journey culminate on a big stage with a finished product being advertised in magazines,on billboards,in stores across the country. Now,we wait for Apple Music to update at midnight.

Tbh I think I was pretty charitable to the new generation in acknowledging my obvious biases towards the music of my adolescence and explaining why I think it’s not the music quality so much as the structure of the industry that is wack now

Yeah but you're not saying anything new. People have said "man music was better when I was younger." Since probably the 50s

In defense of the older heads, there is something to say about music and the experience of following and consuming it being more special when you have to put in more effort to get your hands on it (I.e, actually buying it)

Even torrenting vs streaming had the former being more satisfying “work” before you could listen

Early 10s was the perfect archetype of what the internet and music was suppose to be.

    Yes

If you keep whining about how music was better in the old days its because you subconsciously miss when your life was better in the past

Idk man,I’m into what I’m into. Even though I have my opinions,I’d consider myself “cutting edge”when it comes to clothes/fashion. But let me ask you this, can you say that music today hasn’t devolved(and give reasons why) vs the diversity and regional sounds of the past?
