The only time I believe he was trying to kill Batman was when he did that last punch that (should've killed him) broke his helmet sending him flying.
But if he was going to kill Batman he should've just did it but he's superman he's not going to rightfully so. But he didn't really try hard enough to tell Batman the situation. That's the weird part.
