It has nothing to do with quality. Media has just gotten way too social justice obsessed and sees a straight white man who has been heavily influenced by black culture to make r&b/hip hop infused pop and wants to tear him down. (Same reason why they destroyed Arcade Fire after Reflektor, an album they praised heavily but contained a ton of influence from black genres).

I don't think there's anything he could've done to escape it honestly. Also, I don't even really think that was his message lol. Country gets associated all the time with being for white people but like it was clear from Filthy and Supplies that he was still very much using black sounds and black producers.
