I get where he was coming from. We can try to have this liberal, "sex-positive" view on rap, but the fact of the matter is violence, d****, and s***sells. That's why labels encourage artists to rap about that stuff, and that's mostly why rappers rap about that stuff, especially after they make it big.

In a healthy musical ecosystem, there would be a lane, perhaps a vibrant one too, for this kind of music. But this is the premium for rap at this point, and it's genuinely inhibiting the commercial popularity of the genre, let alone the quality of the music, at this point. We're oversaturated with the same old thing 24/7, and it's doubly as disheartening when what we're oversaturated with is very negative subject matter. Just like we don't wanna listen to hardcore lyricism and conscious messages all the time, I don't want to listen to audio p***, junkie anthems, and murder fantasies all the time either, even if the beats are cool. It's depressing and rap more than ever just feels like yesterday's news as a result of this narrowing of subject matter in the mainstream
