I think him pivoting to the 808s, luxury rap, and EDM influenced sounds at around the same type brought with it an elitist, “You don’t really know music” type of fan base and started alienating a lot of his black fans when it came to defending him within the culture

It's just a passage of time. Unless you were raised right or care about music you won't know about music that predates you.
